Mills time at Turf Moor was not particularly successful. The former Southampton and Reading defender joined Burnley on a free transfer in May 2013 after a spell on loan, but that season he did not feature in Sean Dyche`s plans and played no part in Burnley`s promotion to the top flight spending his time out on loan to first Oldham in August 2013 for a month and then Shrewsbury. Mills joined Shrewsbury Town in January 2014 on loan for the remainder of the 2013-14 season. The only reason it seems he remained on Burnley's books was due to a contractual agreement. Mills signed by former gaffer, Eddie Howe initially joined Burnley on a season long loan after falling down the pecking order at Reading but it seems that the deal contained a contract clause that would force the club into signing the player on a permanent basis despite the fact his face never seemed to fit under new boss Sean Dyche.

Mills joined Oldham on a permanent basis in June 2014 signing a two year deal and left the Clarets having made just ten appearances for the club all of them during his loan spell
