Howieson signed his first professional contract with Burnley at the age of 17 on the 29th March 2012. He will now remain at the club until the end of the 2013/14 season. Premier League clubs, Liverpool and Newcastle were reported to have the midfielder on their radar before he signed the contract.

The New Zealander scored two goals in the FA Youth Cup quarter final against Fulham in February 2012, helping the Clarets reach the semi finals for the first time since 1978.

He was named on the bench for the game away to Portsmouth on the 31st March 2012 but did not feature and has yet to make his first team debut.
