David Nugent signed on loan for six months on the last day of the 2009 Summer Transfer Window with just 30 minutes to the deadline remaining. There is an option for the club to buy the player at the end of the loan period.

He made his debut coming on from the bench in the second half against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday 12th Seprember 2009 although also featured in the earlier match against Accrington Stanley in the SoS friendly the previous Tuesday night.

The striker, has one England cap and started his career with Bury before moving to local rivals, Preston North End in January 2005 for a fee of £100,000. The Clarets at the time under Steve Cotterill were also hoping to sign the striker so things have now come full circle.

In July 2007, Preston accepted a Portsmouth £6 million bid for the player with Sunderland also believed to have put in a similar bid.

Nugent though has made just 34 appearances for Pompey scoring only 3 goals and had been expected earlier in this summer transfer window to be joining Middlesbrough on loan.It would also appear Hull City and Wigan were interested in the player and he made a late decision to join Burnley.

Returned to Portsmouth after his loan deal completed in May 2010
