Kalvenes signed on a Bosman after his contract at Dundee United had expired. The left back was given a two year contract.

Kalvenes joined Dundee United for a fee of around 50,000 in August 2006, signing from Norwegian side, SK Brann where he started his professional career back in 1995 before returning to the club in 2003 via Asane and Norwegian Premier League side Sogndal.

In the Clarets Championship promotion season(2008-9) he made 21 appearances, scored a vital goal away to Blackpool and played in the play-offs final at Wembley in May 2009 against Sheffield United.

The 33-year-old Norwegian though rarely featured for the Clarets in the Premier League during 2009-10 struggling to get a regular place with both Stephen Jordan and Danny Fox ahead of him in the pecking order.Even David Edgar played a couple of games in that position.

He could only manage three starts and made an additional three appearances from the bench. His final game for the Clarets was against Chelsea in January 2010 at Turf Moor when he came on as a substitute.

His contract still had 3 months to run but this was terminated early in April 2010 by mutual consent so he could return home to Norway.
