Came through Burnley's youth system signing for the club in Summer 2006.

MacDonald made his debut at Turf Moor against Cardiff City on the 26th April 2008 coming on as a substitute.

Was given his first professional contract in the Summer of 2008.

The Scottish Under 19 International and captain made six substitute appearances for the Clarets in 2008-9 with his last appearance being in the 3-0 FA Cup defeat away at Arsenal in March 2009.

MacDonald went out on loan to Falkirk in July 2009 until January 2010 in order to give him more competitive games and experience.

After returning, he was again sent on loan again to Scotland in January 2010, joining SPL side Inverness Caledonian Thistle until the end of the season.

In January 2012, he was loaned out to League Two side Plymouth Argyle on an emergency loan until March 6.Alex MacDonald made just 17 appearances for the Clarets before being released at the end of the 2012-13 season. He spent most of his time at Turf Moor out on loan most notably at Plymouth who at one point were keen to sign him on a permanent deal following two spells down in Devon. He also had loan spells at Falkirk. In 2012-13 he also completed a loan spell at Burton Albion.
