On loan from Sunderland until the end of the season (2007/8). The 36 year old has played for 10 clubs in his illustrious career most notably for Manchester and Blackbutn. Released as a free agent from Portsmouth in August 2007, he was snapped up by Sunderland although has only managed eight appearances for the Black Cats so far this season. An England International with 15 caps with nearly 300 goals to his name during his professional career.

Returned to Sunderland at end of 2007/8 season but then released. It had been hoped he would sign for the Clarets on a pay-as-you-play basis but he has rejected the deal and looks set to retire
