Made his senior debut in the 2005-06 season, coming onto the pitch as an early substitute in the 4-0 win against Coventry City on 13 August 2005. Became captain of the club in July 2011. Shackell though took over skipper role for season after. Decided to look for pastures new at the end of the 2012-13 season refusing to negotiate a new contract. He was therefore given a free transfer and left Turf Moor after nine years at the club. He joined Wigan under former Burnley gaffer, Owen Coyle in July 2013 after signing a three year deal. The 25 year old joined the Clarets from Irish boys` club Home Farm at the age of 16 and was fast-tracked into the first team squad in 2005. He went on to make 269 appearances for the Clarets notching up 31 goals.
