The first half saw Burnley have chances through Gray, with the former Brentford man looking to extend his recent goalscoring run, and Barton but the Clarets couldn't force the breakthrough.
Barton also felt he could have had a penalty, which wasn't given with Welsh international Vokes kept out by Blackburn 'keeper Steele as the Clarets had to settle for a goalless first half.
More pressure was put on Burnley in the second half with Blackburn's Conway causing problems but it was Vokes' international teammate Lawrence, who too also had a penalty claim turned away, having a chance to give Rovers a lead he couldn't take.
Heaton was forced into action when Rhodes, who had a good goalscoring record against Burnley coming into this, beat Keane but his effort couldn't beat Heaton in the Clarets goal.
Then the breakthrough finally came as Burnley broke away from that chance with Arfield (63), as the midway point of the half arrived, putting the Clarets with this goal proving to be the winner.
A late scare was survived when Conway had an effort that hit the crossbar as a one-nil win was seen out.
