Burnley vs. Scunthorpe

Turf Moor

26th January 2008

3pm

Steal from Iron, Burnley!

The Clarets will be hoping the Iron continues to rust when lowly Scunthorpe visit Turf Moor tomorrow.

The visitors have not won now in 17 matches in all competitions and find themselves second from bottom with 27 points and the worst goal difference in the division (minus 15).

One of their defeats was in the FA Cup allowing this fixture to be played on a Saturday during FA Cup weekend after both clubs no longer have any interest in the competition.

The fixture was originally going to be played next Tuesday night but has been brought forward to the Saturday probably to the relief of both sets of fans.

It was hoped before this review that we might have had some good news on the transfer front but it has been another frustrating week for Owen Coyle with no new signings yet announced. It has been even more frustrating for the fans I hasten to add, still trying to recover from the loss of our leading goal scorer, Andy Gray.

There have been some positive noises and hints that signings could be made this week but nothing has materialised. We shall have to see if there is a new player unveiled tomorrow before kick-off but at the moment this looks unlikely.

There are only two Championship matches being played tomorrow including our fixture, and this will be an ideal opportunity to progress up the table and stake a claim for the play-off positions. The Clarets are currently joint 9th on 40 points, just four away from the 6th placed club, Charlton;rather ironically in view of Andy Gray now having completed his move to the Addicks.

The only injury doubt is Clarke Carlisle still suffering from a hamstring strain and Caldwell will be available after completing a one-match ban for a fifth yellow.

Kyle Lafferty however will be sidelined, still sitting out his four match ban for that controversial red-card sending off against Arsenal in the FA Cup.

Owen Coyle has made it plain that Jensen will retain his place in goa

Vital Quotes:

'It is important that we take those two wins on now.

'There are only two games in the Championship (on Saturday) and we have to get points on the board.

'There is an opportunity to push on and get three wins on the bounce and really push ourselves in among the top six.

'But we are going to have to be at our very best because Scunthorpe will come here fighting for every point.

'We will give Scunthorpe every respect because they are a very hard working side who I don't think have had a lot of the bounce of the ball lately.

'But they have shown that they have a tremendous work ethic and they will be a handful.

'We just have to make sure we are at our best and if we are, we are capable of winning games'

Player to watch: Ade Akinbiyi

Could he become again the folk hero at Turf Moor now that Andy Gray has left? Let's hope he can add to his goal tally and score again for the second match running.

Scunthorpe Team News:

19-year-old Liverpool defender Jack Hobbs has joined Scunthorpe on loan until the end of the season and he can also play in midfield. He is likely to go straight into the squad for this match.

Shelton Martis plays his last game before returning to West Brom.

Cliff Byrne is out through suspension.

Player to watch: Jack Hobbs

If he is played in defence, which is currently their weak area, it could be a baptism of fire.

Match Facts & Stats

We were defeated 2-0 away in August 2007 and you have to go back to Jan 2001 for the last time we played them at Turf Moor. That was an FA Cup match in which we drew 2-2, losing the replay away on penalties.

Scunthorpe seem to have had the better of us in recent times, they also beat the Clarets 2-1 in their last League visit in October 1999 in a League Division 2 match.

Match Prediction:

I just think we are due to give a team a real tonking, and this should be possible against struggling Scunthorpe with the worst defence in the League. 4-0 Clarets

Next Fixtures:

Its a difficult trip away to leaders, West Brom a week tomorrow (2nd Feb 08 @3pm)

Convincing win and could have been far more, Scunny most surely be the worst team at the Turf in some time, certainly this season. How the hell did they beat us 2-0 back in August? Match report to follow
