Burnley vs. Stoke City

Turf Moor

24th November 2007

3pm

New Dawn as Stoke Visit

Its a new dawn and its a new match day with a new chant, Owen Coyle's Claret & Blue Army. Step forward the new manager has he takes charge for the first time in this special 125th Anniversary match with Stoke City the visitors to Turf Moor. The problem with the chant though will be the fact we wont be playing in Claret & Blue with the lads donning the special blue & white stripes number as a one off!

Its all going to be a shock for the visiting Stoke fans, why are they playing in stripes they might be asking? They wont even be able to shout their famous digs at Quitterill, Mutualconsenterill doesnt quite have the same ring does it? Wayne Thomas along with Gifton Noel-Williams are of course two former Stoke players who have since departed the club in recent times so they will have to hope that James O'Connor along with Ade Akinbiyi might feature in this match. In reality both of them are most likely bench warming with Akinbiyi likely to do his supersub routine with 20 minutes left unless of course the new gaffer tries something different.

Its been an hectic two weeks since our last match, after Steve Cotterill left leaving caretaker boss, Steve Davis in charge to secure an away win against Leicester. The new manager takes charge with the club still well placed in 13th spot, on 21 points and only 4 points behind 6th placed club, Ipswich with a game in hand over most clubs. Three points against Stoke could see us very well placed indeed and set of the new reign to a tee.

The two week break due to the Euro 2008 Internationals will hopefully have allowed a few injuries and knocks to recover, especially to Jordan.Stephen Jordan's troublesome ankle injury flared up again with only eight minutes of the first half against Leicester to go. He tried to bravely carry on up to the first half whistle but it wasnt to be and he was subbed after 42 minutes. Lets hope he has made a full recovery. David Unsworth also returns after his one match ban following a red card against Hull but will he feature in the 16?

The team could be something like this:

Kiraly, Alexander, Jordan, Carlisle, Unsworth, Elliott, McCann, Spicer, Lafferty, Gray, Blake.

Subs: J O'Connor or Harley, Akinbiyi, Jensen, Jones, Mahon

Lets hope for a great start to Coyle's career as a Claret on this special day playing in a funny strip!

Owen Offers:

'My message to the fans would be come and support us and give us all your encouragement,' he told the club's official website.

'Players respond to support and encouragement and we will be trying to give every effort to go and win football games for you.

'I am delighted to take this opportunity. Delighted is an understatement and I just can't wait to get going now.

Burnley Team News:

The Clarets appear to have a full squad to choose from after the International break apart from of course Duff and Berisha. Unsworth also is available after his one match ban.

Player to watch: Ade Akinbiyi

Some talk of Ade masks? Less said about that the better still if he plays, he will be keen to get on the score sheet against one of his former clubs.

Stoke City Team News:

Richard Cresswell and Mamady Sidibe look set to line up in attack for the first time together. Vincent Pericard though could feature

Leading scorer Ricardo Fuller is however suspended. Jon Parkin has a bout of flu which ruled him out of training for much of the week.

Skipper Dominic Matteo has recovered from a torn hamstring and could be back in contention for a midfield place.

Player to watch: Richard Cresswell

Cressy is always a thorn

Last Time We Met

An awful match, in an awful bad spell for the Clarets back in January. We lost one nil at home ensuring Stoke got revenge for a similar score we got against them at the Britannia Stadium.

Match Prediction:

Lets start as we mean to go on with a thumping 3-0 victory

Next Match:

A tricky trip to top of the league, Watford on Tuesday night (27th Nov) @ 7:45 pm KO

What do you guys think of Cotterill .....would he be good for Argyle?
Pbennyboy
We fall into two camps, a set who couldnt wait to see the back of him and another set who are just hoping and praying the right decision has been made. I am personally in the later group and believe there was more to SC than maybe the results in recent times suggest. We have had promotion winning streaks, typically pre-Xmas and relegation form slumps, typically post-Xmas. We have had one of the smallest squads in the League and typically in Jan have lost key players in the transfer window, plus last season,Gray to injury. Until Flood arrived,we had been in financial dire straits so maybe Coyle arrives at the right time and we will never be able now to judge what SC can do with bigger squads and budgets. I wish SC well and hope he proves his critics wrong and is successful at his next club.Plymouth in my opinion could do far worse than take him on
