Clarets in Bristol Fashion

Bristol City
vs.
Burnley

Ashton Gate

22nd September 07

3pm

The Clarets will be seeking their third away win of the season today as they travel to Ashton Gate. Bristol City, promoted only last season have surprised many and are currently in second place on 12 points and still unbeaten. Burnley FC however are closely chasing them in 6th place on 10 points with a game in hand. You could say at the moment we are in good shape maybe ship-shape and bristol fashion as we seek to continue our rise up the table.

The scene is therefore set for an intriguing battle this afternoon.

The gaffer looks likely to select a similar 16 to those that featured in our last match in midweek away to the Owls.

The only doubt from that selection would appear to be Chris McCann who is suffering from a groin strain. It is likely that Gudjonsson, who came on from the bench in midweek could start this match. If he does lets hope he puts in a great performance and begins to start answering his critics.

Alan Mahon is also still injured with a thigh strain and remains doubtful and of course the long-term injury to Berisha means he is unavailable for selection and will be probably for the rest of the season. Apart from these three though, Steve Cotterill will have the rest of the squad to choose from. The Gray/Blake parnership with Ade Akinbiyi coming on for the last 20 minutes seems to working very well.

After the Owls match it looks like Blake in particular is now becoming the lethal weapon we saw the first time round as a Clarets player.

In theory if we win today we could be placed 2nd depending on the results of the other matches and with a game in hand. How good would that be? Come on lads

Steve Says:

'We've started well that's been the big thing. We have passed the ball well and got into our stride really quickly,'

'I always think that the start is important. If you start a game poorly it's hard to turn it around, but if you start a game well you invariably can get better.

'We're pleased with what we have done so far. We've had one defeat in seven games so it's been a good start.'

'I'm pleased for Bristol City, they were just up the road from me when I was in charge at Cheltenham. When I was at Cheltenham, Bristol City would have been one of the clubs that I would have wanted to manage.I have a good affinity with them. We speak the same so we won't have a problem understanding each other at the weekend!

'I know a couple of people on the board as well, so I'm looking forward to seeing them. Gary Johnson speaks for himself, I've known him since he was at Yeovil in non-league and he's had the similar route that I've had coming up through the leagues. I'm pleased for him and looking forward to seeing him on Saturday as well.

'Bristol City are a big club, they always have been. Now they are up with us, there will be good crowds there. '

Bristol City Team News:

Bristol City winger Michael McIndoe may not feature suffering a dead leg against WBA in midweek. He is rated with a 50:50 chance of playing

David Noble has recovered from a groin injury but is not match fit and strikers Enoch Showunmi (leg) and Steve Brooker (knee) look doubtful

Player to watch: Lee Trundle

A contoversial player causing mixed emotions amongst rival fans. Once rumoured to be linked to a move to Turf Moor, it will be interesting to see how he performs. Trundle was transferred from Swansea City to the Bristol club back in July for 1 million.

Watch out for former loan Claret, Bradley Orr as well. The defender got on the scoresheet against WBA in midweek

Burnley Team News:

As stated above doubts remain over Alan Mahon and Chris McCann but apart from Berisha, the gaffer appears to have the rest of the reamining players in the sqaud to choose from.

Player to watch: Robbie Blake

Now firing on all cylinders, will we see him consolidate his performance against Wednesday in midweek and get on the score sheet again?

Last Time We Met

You have to go back to Season 1999/00 for the last time we played each other. A dire 0-0 draw was the result at Ashton Gate although we did win 2-0 at Turf Moor with goals from the two 'chefs' Cook and Cooke! That season of course we got promoted, lets hope for something similar this season

Match Prediction:

1-2 to the Clarets

Next match

Portsmouth at home on Tuesday night in the Carling Cup (7:45pm KO) will be followed on Saturday 29th September with our home League match against Crystal Palace 3pm KO
