Burnley vs. Norwich

Turf Moor

20th January 2007

Clarets & Canaries

The Clarets take on Norwich at Turf Moor this Saturday hoping to get back to winning ways and get back in the play-offs hunt. 13th placed Burnley with a game in hand over most clubs face 17th place Norwich. Lets hope Norwich continue their dire away form with only one win and one draw in the last six matches. The Clarets have dropped off the pace recently and we desperately need a win to get back on track and aim for a play-offs position. There have however been encouraging signs in our last two matches against Reading in the FA Cup and against the Saints last Saturday.

Burnley Team News:

It is likely we shall see the home debuts of our three recent signings. A second home debut for Ade Akinbiyi complimented with the home debuts of loan signings, Mike Pollitt in goal and midfielder, Eric Djembe-Djembe. Steve Cotterill may well start with a similar line-up that saw four changes from the previous match against Southampton and pair, Ade Akinbiyi with Kyle Lafferty up front in 4:4:2. Kyle has certainly been in the news this week and lets hope the press hounding him over the Celtic interest wont effect his game should Steve select him in the line-up. Clarets fans had hoped to see another new face in this match but it looks like a fourth signing may well have stalled and now looks less likely. Wade Elliott also was yellow-carded for the fifth time this season late in injury time against Southampton so will have to sit out the Norwich match on a one-match suspension. Steve Jones may well return and it will be interesting to see if 'The Beast' is named in the squad. It is understood, there has been some speculation in the press that Jensen may be leaving in the January transfer window. If the Beast is leaving we will again not have a goalkeeper on the bench as Coyne is still out with a hamstring injury. There is also a question mark about whether Alan Mahon will feature following a groin strain injury during warm up against Southampton

A possible line-up could be:

Pollitt, Thomas, Duff, McGreal, Harley, Jones, J O'Connor, McCann, Djemba-Djemba, Lafferty, Akinbiyi.

Subs: Jensen, Noel-Williams, Foster, Spicer or Mahon, G O'Connor.

Player to watch: Eric Djembe-Djembe

After his impressive debut against Saints last Saturday, some would say Man of the Match, Clarets fans will be hoping Eric continues to impress in his midfield role.

Norwich Team News:

The sad news that Earnshaw will be out of the game some time through a serious groin injury will not gladden the hearts of the Canaries fans nor should it the Clarets! It might make our task easier, but its always sad to see a player suffer a long term injury no matter who that player is or what team he plays for. Earnshaw picked up an injury in training requiring an operation and now looks likely to be out until at least April if not till next season. It would appear a ligament has come away from the bone. Get well soon Earnie!

Player to watch: Darren Huckerby

Always a threat and has on occasion shown our defence to be suspect although he was just returning from injury last time the two teams met and seemed underpar in a 4-1 Clarets win at Carrow Road back in October

Last Time We Met!

Clarets fans will remember with joy the last time we played Norwich. This was away at Carrow Road on 1st October last year. We triumphed 4-1 that day, which led soon after to a sacking for manager, Nigel Worthington after the Norwich fans had been calling for his scalp for sometime. It was even sweeter that day for those fans that couldnt make the long trek down to East Anglia. Sky bless them also televised the game!

Ref Watch:

Martin Atkinson. A Premiership referee making his debut officiating a match at Turf Moor.

Match Prediction:

2-1 for the Clarets although without Earnshaw and no recognised powerful strikers, Norwich might struggle to score.

Next Fixtures:

Stoke City on Tuesday 23rd January at Turf Moor @ 7:45 pm KO. This is the rearranged match from New Years Day which was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Oh well that was a waste of time writing that! Another match called off due to a waterlogged pitch and a lot of disgruntled fans
