Saturday 15th November 2008
Well after the sensational victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night in the Carling Cup, a short trip across London to face QPR on Saturday in the Championship might seem like an anti-climax! Will the lads be on top form and their energy high after that gruelling match and euphoric victory against the Premier League leaders?
In many ways, this match is probably more important in the long run, if we want to face Chelsea on a more regular basis in the top flight.
The match against QPR could be a thriller with fifth placed Burnley up against the Rs who are currently 7th just one point behind the Clarets. A six pointer of a game by any criteria!
QPR themselves had a testing match at Old Trafford in midweek against Manchester United going down 1-0 in the Carling Cup. They too might be feeling some after effects so the Clarets charge up the table could continue after the disappointing 2-0 defeat against Wolves at Molineux last Saturday. That defeat was only our second loss now in 17 Cup & League games.
Come on you Clarets!
Steve Thompson, cup tied last Wednesday is available again as is Clarke Carlisle missing on Wednesday night due to a one match suspension after a double yellow picked up in our last League game away to Wolves last Saturday.
Coyle might be tempted to play both adding some freshness to the team after all the antics in midweek and it looks like Carlisle will be a straight swop for Caldwell who was unfortunate to pick up a double yellow and be sent off late in extra time against Chelsea in midweek. Caldwell faces an automatic one match ban.
The big question is whether hero Ade Akinbiyi, scorer of the equaliser against Chelsea will be rewarded with a place in the squad after missing out in recent League matches with Jay Rodriguez stealing the limelight on the bench. Owen Coyle has a tendency to show loyalty to players who play well and Akinbiyi could find himself named at least in the sixteen once again. Martin Paterson could again be the player to make way for Thompson with Blake playing behind him unless Coyle thinks it might be time to rest Blake once more and return to the twin attack of Thompson and Paterson.
Kalvenes might also be fit if he has recovered from his leg injury giving Coyle more options in defence and if he is available, an option to revert back to 4-1-4-1 could be on the cards.
One person missing out in the eighteen on Wednesday night was Remco van der Schaaf who is understood to still be suffering from a virus.
Lots of options still though and a possible sixteen could be as follows:
Jensen, Alexander, Duff, Carlisle, Jordan, Elliott, McCann, Gudjonsson, Eagles, Blake, Thompson
Subs: Penny, McDonald, Akinbiyi or Rodriguez, Paterson, Mahon
Looks like another 4-4-2 unless Kalvenes becomes available at left back in which case Duff could move to right back, Jordan in the centre and Alexander return to being the holding midfielder in 4-1-4-1.
Akos Buzsaky has been ruled out for the rest of the season with knee ligament damage and Rowan Vine is still battling back from a broken leg picked up last season.
Hogan Ephraim could be in the sixteen if not the starting eleven.
Mikele Leigertwood however is still suspended.
Loan Real Madrid striker Daniel Parejo looks fit enough to play despite picking up a back injury at Old Trafford in midweek as does midfielder Gavin Mahon after recovering from a knee injury picked up in the same match.
I will take the comments from Vital QPR`s Editor, Boxer in this regard. He chooses Samuel Di Carmine and writes:
"Samuel Di Carmine has burst onto scene in recent weeks and appears for the time being to be the number one choice alongside Blackstock.
Di Carmine`s strike against Birmingham City really displayed his vast talent, not only with his incredible technique in his strike, but playing selflessly with his back to goal the entire fixture.
Since joining the R`s from Fiorentina on loan, the 20-year-old found appearances hard to come by under Iain Dowie. However following the dismissal of the former Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic boss, Samuel has come into his own under Gareth Ainsworth.
Come Saturday a tired Burnley rearguard may find Samuel a real handful, with his eye for goal and venomous drives."

Carlisle returns from a one match suspension only to be replaced by Caldwell who picked up a one match ban on Wednesday night after being sent off for a second yellow.
Thompson is available again after being cup tied. Kalvenes still looks doubtful (leg injury) as does Remco van der Schaaf (virus)
Brian Jensen has brought out some awesome saves in recent matches culminating in the two penalty shootout saves against Chelsea`s Bridge and Mikel on Wednesday night.
Let`s hope the form continues and he can keep out QPR`s attack force.
We won this fixture 4-2 back in February this year and who can forget the Andrew Cole hat trick. Ade Akinbiyi was also on form getting the other goal and linking up superbly with Cole.
The victory gave the Clarets some revenge for the 2-0 defeat at Turf Moor in December 2007.
Keith Woolmer (Northamptonshire)
Providing tiredness and recovering from that euphoric victory doesn`t affect performance I think we will be too strong for QPR and expect a 1-0 away win.
On the face of it after recent matches a relatively easy home game against struggling newly promoted club Doncaster Rovers. We play them at Turf Moor on Saturday 22nd November @ 3pm KO
Losing against the bottom club in the Championship after beating the top club in the Premier League would take the biscuit and would be typical Burnley!
