Stoke get Whelan

Stoke City have signed Glenn Whelan from Sheffield Wednesday for £500,000 to take the winger to the Britannia Stadium on a three-and-a-half year contract

Whelan had been the subject of bids from both the Clarets and Plymouth Argyle earlier in the transfer window.

He would have been out of contract at the end of the season.

This will dishearten a number of Clarets fans. The Clarets were believed to have had a bid of £400,000 turned down by the Owls so if they really wanted him, you would have thought an extra £100,000 plus could have been found somewhere to outbid one of our rivals for promotion.

Oh well it looks like we have lost all four of our targets, Riordan, Robson, Whelan and Carrusca. The transfer window is now shut so unless there are any early announcements of deals already done tomorrow, thats it until the Summer unless we have more UK loans lined up.

What the hell is this club doing? One point off the play-offs and all we can manage is three loans?

I know it's pretty rubbish, OC must think that the players have it in them. Although 3 ok signings, I'm most impressed with the young gunner though, nice one.
AccyClaret
Sounds like we nearly got the Argy but the club changed terms at the last minute to something that wasnt acceptable to player, still a chance we could sign him in Summer according to Coyle in LT. Just hope we havent missed a chance by not increasing the squad further now considering out position with all to play for

We have got it all to play for now. It's up to the lads now to prove their worth. At least Wade Elliott is still in a claret shirt. Can really show everyone in this league our intentions tomorrow against West Brom
AccyClaret
I suppose with Lafferty still here and soon to be available, with presumably Carlisle & Mahon not too far off with these hamstring problems plus Duff looking close to return then maybe Berisha later, things could be worse. 3 new faces in, one out, 2 extra additions to squad although you cant really count Adam Kay and Jay is out on loan too! Would have felt a lot better had we made just one more permanent signing of the calibre of Riordan or Argy
turfmanphil
we had lots of players linked and out of all of them we got cole, on loan.

Still think we've got the quality in the squad to do it this time, ok the numbers are down but when the injuries return OC will have a good selection.
AccyClaret
Still not happy with the lack of signings though, wish we'd of bought some players!
AccyClaret
Yeah I was a bit deflated this morning when I found out young Randall was all we'd signed..no chance of a Caldwell-esque announcement now!! But I like Phils optimistic view and things could be worse. Always look on the bright side of life...
SaintClaret
Think you've got to as a Claret.
AccyClaret
Feel deflated today, nowt to talk about really. Need a win against West Brom to get the juices flowing again
turfmanphil
Well I'm just getting ready to go, gonna be a cracker me thinks! 3 points today and theres a load of snow round here.
AccyClaret
Feel very nervy about this one, think we can win it but not certain we will. If we did, its going to do us all a power of good, club & fans alike and will really send out all the right signals
