Coyle Gives Up on Riordan?

Clarets gaffer, Owen Coyle appears to have ended his interest in Celtic striker Derek Riordan according to the Sporting Life

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move South across the border in recent weeks but the club involved doesn't look like it will now be the Clarets. It would appear the club failed in a reported 400,000 bid for the striker which came nowhere near the 1 million valuation put on the player by Buoys boss, Gordon Strachan

Speaking also to the Daily Record, Coyle said the following:

'We made a bid for Riordan, it was turned down and that's that.'

He went on to say

'I'm looking a three or four different players at this moment in time. It's no secret we need one or two players to increase the squad but we will try to be selective and make sure it is the right player for this football club.'

Looks like we can strike this one off the list which is a shame! :-(

Coyle made a decent offer for Riordan . Unfortunately it was turneddown . I am given that the player insists on joining Burnley but the greed of a great club like Celtic is enormous just depriving both the club and the player .How sad?

Obviously 1 million is viewed as a rip-off even though we could probably afford it now after selling Gray. Time to move on

They want 500k apparently! Riordan has already said that he would love to come to Burnley! Think we should of tried a bit harder to get him myself.

You would think if we realy wanted him, we would have gone the extra mile to fork out an additional 100k though? I heard Celtic were wanting summat like 1 million which sounds a better reason for saying no?

Actually says he (Strachan) is demanding more than 500,000 , which could mean owt, perhaps they would have negotiated somewhere between 0.5-1m?

Maybe it's a tactical play by OC? Riordan wants to come to Burnley, OC says he's leaving it, Celtic know he's unsettled and have a player that wants out! So we can go back in at a slightly higher price or they can come to us with what they're prepared to take for him!

The more I look at this, it seems there have been up to 4 players the Clarets have looked at ie Whelan, Lee down here and Riordan & Robson from Scotland referred to in the following statement recently by Fllod:Flood confirmed Burnley were looking at players north and south of the border and wouldn't rule out Alan Lee returning to Turf Moor from Ipswich Town, but added: "We can't afford to be exclusively focused on one player. "Discussions are ongoing but there's nothing agreed as yet. "We haven't dismissed Glenn Whelan and there are a couple of lads from Scotland we're interested in. "There are often a number of prospects that come to you over every other day." Looks like one of the lads from Scotland is now out the frame (Riordan) with Robson still a possibility. It also seems to me this so called cast-iron signing has fallen through!

He did say early next week, I think we should give him till wednesday then start getting really really really frustrated!!! I'm trying to hold out on getting mad by thinking of all the positive things that we've all seen recently(bar the Blackpool game). Just think if we do end up signing Lee, a player who didn't like it here before and doesn't want to come back for 1 million and we couldn't of upped our bid for Riordan it'll be a massive injustice!

I think there is one question on the lips of most Clarets fans at the moment-WHAT THE ***** IS GOING ON!!

All I've heard is Whispers and maybes so far! I like OC, but he really needs to pull off something spectacular now! We need some strategic chants come saturday, "We want Riordan", "We want Robson too" "Can we have some money mr flood" Don't think it'll come to that though

By all accounts we have least 1.5 million from the Gray deal that Flood has promised every last penny to give to Coyle for a new player(s)! Lets get a friggin move on!

I would think the fans would be up in arms if nobody came in by end Jan with only one loan and losing our star striker! Surely the Board can see that? They may have to pay over the odds, but so be it. We are only four points off play-offs, we will never do it with a squad of what 21-22 players now?

I agree, more money spent on a few more players to ensure we get that play off place! Or if they make exceptional signings, 1st or 2nd isn't completley out of reach quite yet! All it takes is a good run!
