Manager Says-Burnley 2:3 Saints

Burnley were left licking their wounds late on Saturday night after they had been comprehensively beaten 3-2 at home by Southampton in front of the Sky Cameras(Worse luck!)

This could only be described as the worse performance this season and most be causing some concern for the gaffer. We at least showed some spirit to avoid a thumping and twice got a goal back with Saints two goals to the good each time but overall this performance was simply not good enough and there can be no excuses.

So will the gaffer be making any? Here is what he had to say about the debacle

'It was almost a comeback, but we gave ourselves a mountain to climb,' 'When we got back to 2-1 we gave ourselves a chance and if we had got the next goal, we think we can go on and win the game.

'But when you concede a third one and especially the manner of the goals, then it doesn't matter what you do.

'Once that third went in, whilst we didn't give up when a lot of teams would have capitulated, we didn't quite have enough to go and get an equaliser,

'You can make as many subs and change the formation as much as you like, but once you are indulging in give in them three goals then it's going to be become a problem for you.

'If you cannot head it, you are going to concede goals. You just have to take more responsibility in certain situations and there are a few who need to go home and have a little bit of a look at themselves tonight.'

'I am annoyed at a few, but as a group I thought they showed a good bit of character and spirit, but unfortunately it wasn't enough for us.

'When the likes of Wade Elliott has three games in a week and John Spicer and Chris McCann have covered the best part of 13 kilometres in two games before tonight, it's inevitable that you are going to lose your legs a little bit.

'Whether it was the goal or not, I don't know, but I felt it took us 20 minutes to get into the game and clean sheets is proving our Achilles heel.

'But we are built to win and we have gone and played some good attacking football tonight and lost because of our defending.

'I think you always have to pick your best team and the reason we have got to where we have tonight is that the players who haven't played, haven't shown up and that's why they are not in the team.

'Unfortunately, when you get to this stage it's like one game too many for us.

Discard this match into the bin of history and for heaven's sake move on and take stock. We must never play like that again if we are to even come close of reaching the play-offs this season and if we do play like that again the calls for Steve to go will only get more and more verbal and more discomforting for all concerned.
