Reactions - Burnley v Watford (9/12/17)

Following today's clash between Burnley and Watford, here are the instant reactions from both managers.

Burnley hosted Watford at Turf Moor for a 3pm kick off on Saturday December 9, with a goal from Scott Arfield in the 45th minute enough to separate the sides come the full time whistle.

Watford were reduced to ten men in the game following a straight red card for Marvin Zeegelaar and the visitors had two second half penalty appeals rejected by the referee.

The win lifts Burnley to within a point of the Champions League places.

Teams:

Burnley:

Pope, Bardsley, Long, Tarkowski, Ward, Defour (Westwood 90+4), Cork, Berg Gudmundsson, Hendrick (Barnes 60), Arfield, Wood.

Substitutes:

Taylor, Vokes, Ulvestad, Wells, Lindegaard.

Watford:

Gomes, Janmaat, Mariappa, Kabasele, Zeegelaar, Cleverley, Doucoure, Carrillo (Gray 79), Pereyra (Holebas 44), Richarlison, Deeney.

Substitutes:

Prodl, Success, Watson, Capoue, Karnezis.

Speaking to the BBC's cameras a short time after match day referee Lee Probert blew the final whistle, Burnley manager Sean Dyche explained.

'I'm really pleased with the result. Watford had a very strong start to the season and we knew they're a strong side. We started slowly but overall delivered a strong performance. It's strange when the opposition go a man down because you're then in a fight where everyone expects you to win. But overall this is another big three points for us.'

As for the red card, Dyche added.

'It was definitely a red card. I thought so at the time. I've seen it afterwards and it's a poor challenge.'

Watford head coach Marco Silva in his comparitive interview explained that the red card was 'the decision that influenced the whole of the match' and he wasn't best pleased with the decision.

'We had to compete the rest of the game 10 men against 11. It was an unfair game then as a result. I don't want to talk here about the referee but I think everyone understands his big influence on the match.'

Goalkeeper Huerelho Gomes was in a more talkative mood following the game.

'It was a very harsh decision on the red card and we deserved more from the game as we fought to the end. We had some good opportunities and could easily have scored, but sometimes the game is like this. We now need to try to get back to winning ways again, but it's entirely up to us. We are having a great season and believe in our own quality.'

We got them back for last season when Hendrick was sent of after a couple of minutes for similar sliding tackle. Watford came back strong as we did at their place.( One of the away game defeats i attended last season). We had two goals harshly crossed off, resulting in a nervy finish. 28 POINTS The question is how high can we go.

With a different ref we could have won 4 - 0. One clear hand ball penalty ant two offside goals. The FA really do need to sort out the offside and penalty instructions to refs, there is too much inconsistency. The sending off was justified. It seems to be this players style, he repeatedly tried to kick Harry Kean off the park in the Spurs / Watford game. UTC.
