Dyche - Tarks Will Shake It Off

Dyche - Tarks Will Shake It Off

Manager Sean Dyche has backed skipper James Tarkowski to shake off his penalty miss in last night's loss to Leeds United.

Hosting Leeds at Turf Moor for the EFL Cup third round tie, scores were tied at the full time and extra time whistles and the game went to penalties, with Tarkowski seeing his effort saved it meant unfortunately that the visitors booked their place in round four.

Speaking to the Official Site today, Dyche knew it was just one of those unfortunate things that can happen in spot kicks and he backed Tarkowski to quickly bounce back - especially after he concededa penalty at the end of normal time.

'I`m not at all disappointed for Tarky. He`s doing fantastically well this season. Every single day I am seeing a player who is learning and growing and last night has been a big part of that process. A couple of key moments won`t change the amount of hard work that he`s put in this season. I`m really pleased with the way he is approaching every match this season.'

With this year's EFL Cup allowing a fourth substitution if a game goes into extra time, Dyche made full use of that as he threw Steven Defour on, but he said it was to protect Ashley Westwood as opposed to adding an extra penalty taker.

'You can`t take the risk with these types of concerns. We didn`t know whether he was suffering from cramp after a long match or if it was something more sinister. We took the decision to protect Ashley by taking him off to ensure no further damage.'

With seven changes made to the team that faced Liverpool, he went on to say.

'We took the game very seriously. The way we played throughout the whole 120 minutes demonstrated that. I said coming into the match that we would be playing to win and that is exactly what we did. We`ve got an excellent group here at Burnley and it was great for a number of players to get time in a competitive match over 120 minutes to help in the maintenance of their fitness levels.'

Not Tarks fault. If there is any blame, look at the missed chances during the game. We really do need to improve our successful strike rat starting against Huddersfield.. Come on you Clarets.
