Dyche - We Tried Everything To Keep Gray

Dyche - We Tried Everything To Keep Gray

Manager Sean Dyche was meeting with the media yesterday for his pre Chelsea press conference and obviously a portion of it was devoted to Andre Gray's departure to Watford.

Burnley made the deal, reported as £11.5million up front potentially rising to £18.5million, when Gray made it clear he wouldn't accept an improved contract at Turf Moor which was offered, and for Dyche it was simply a case of making a 'difficult situation' work for the long term benefit of the club itself.

Speaking to the Official Site Dyche explained that his departure worked for the club financially, and it now opens the door for somebody else to step up and shine.

'Andre had a year left on his contract, which is always a tricky time. It`s difficult for the player because they`ve got to make a decision, difficult for us as a club because often financially a player has outgrown the club from their contract side of things, which will always remain private. So, decisions have to be made. The timing is not ideal, we know that.'

Whilst the timing may not have been perfect, Dyche knew we'd been through this previously.

'But we have been through this before. In my first full season here Charlie Austin moved two days before the season and then the emergence of Danny Ings and Sam Vokes came and we got promoted. That doesn`t guarantee anything now, but it opens up the thinking for other players. It`s another good player going out the building but that`s a chance for another of our good players to play and make a name for themselves, in whichever shape or form that comes.'

He added.

'We are definitely not a one-man team. We are a group and a team that can take on a challenge.'

The gaffer did admit that he remains on the lookout for a replacement though whilst the window is open but he does have options available to him following the arrival of Jon Walters.

'We are still in the market. There is money available but there have to be the right players available. No-one wants to get the recruitment model wrong. It`s not an exact science. It`s tough, so we have to be as sure as we possibly can on who we are bringing in in the future.'

He went on to say.

'We`ve made good money from players going out, which proves yet again that we got players in at a level and developed them and added to what they are. Now, can we continue that by getting more players in? It`s a difficult proposition. The club has got to continue to build a recruitment process. A lot of the bigger clubs, particularly in the Premier League, have been building a background on players for years before they sometimes sign them. Ours is still building and it takes times to do that.'
