Dyche Delighted With Shamrock Opener

Manager Sean Dyche has spoken of his pleasure at Burnley's opening pre season friendly victory over Shamrock Rovers.

With the Burnley players heading to Ireland for a mini pre season tour and plenty of headlines about the Republic of Burnley, it was fitting that internationals Jon Walters and Robbie Brady hit the target in front of their home crowd in our four nil victory.

New signing and former Stoke City player Walters needed only nine minute to hit his debut goal on his debut as he connected with a pass from fellow debutant Jack Cork and Republic of Ireland team mate Robbie Brady came off the bench to add one of three second half goals as we tied the match up in emphatic style.

Ashley Barnes and Sam Vokes netted the other two goals on the day and Charlie Taylor completed the new signing debut set in the game as well.

Dyche as expected utilised the full squad available to him with different starting elevens beginning each half, so it was a worthy run out for players with 45 minutes under their belts - although Walters did only get 33 minutes as he impressed.

It must be said following Shamrock's three two defeat to Czech side Mlada Boleslav in the Europe League 24 hours ahead of our tie against them this weekend, they featured a much changed side, and it wasn't their starting eleven but that matters little as a run out is all that matters at this stage for us and they ticked the competition box despite their own youthful outlook.

Burnley first half:

Heaton, Darikwa, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, Defour, Cork, O'Neill, Gudmundsson, Walters (Agyei 34), Gray.

Burnley second half:

Pope, Lowton, Anderson, K Long, Ward, Ulvestad (Agyei 78), Westwood, Hendrick, Brady, Vokes, Barnes (C Long 85).

Goals - Walters(9), Barnes (53), Brady (71), Vokes (88).

Shamrock Rovers:

Horgan, Bone, Collins, Carpenter, McAllister, English (Dillon 61), Bolger (Cornally 40), Doona (Clarke 61), O'Connor, Boyd, Linthorst.

Referee: Ben Connolly.

Speaking to the Official Site Dyche felt it had been the perfect start and a great way to top off the training that had been done so far this pre season.

'I`m really pleased. We all know that it`s about getting players fit in the right way, so they don`t break. I came to the Shamrock Europa League game on Thursday night, so we knew they would field a young side, but you know what it`s like when they do; they are going to run hard and I thought they did. There is a good feel to the club here at Shamrock. I really feel they`ve got something going and they gave us a really good challenge, but we managed to get 45 minutes into most of the players.'

Dyche went on to say about the early substitution of Walters.

'Jon Walters just came off to be careful because he`s just getting used to what we do and we don`t want any niggles. We wanted everyone to come through it, which they have, and I thought there were some good habits shown by the team. We are only one week in and it takes your body and mind time to bring back together the little details, but I felt they delivered it really well, so overall I am pleased.'

With a good number of travelling fans added to the home crowd who enjoyed appearances by their internationals Dyche went on to say.

'I must say also it`s been great for the Burnley fans. We do try and think about pre-season and the only one that caught us out was the Austria game in the middle of nowhere. Access should always be easy for the fans, so I am really pleased that the fans came to join us. It`s been a really good bonus, because we added this game onto a training week and we thank Shamrock for putting it on for us, so I am pleased on all levels.'

He added.

'It rounds off a great week. The facilities have been great, as has training and the feel of the camp has been really good and that`s been brought on by the players and my staff. I`ve really enjoyed that, and the work has been terrific. The lads are looking in really, really good shape physically, so I am pleased on all levels. It`s early yet, but it`s a good start!'
