The Rumour Mill- Steve Caldwell

The Rumour Mill- Steve Caldwell

There have been lots of rumours and speculation around Turf Moor that the Clarets are interested in bringing in Steve Caldwell from Sunderland in a £400k deal. This appears to have been confirmed today by the Daily Mirror.

Steve Cotterill himself indicated after signing Joey Gudjonssen last week that he was looking at another two possible signings in the remaining few days of the open Transfer Window. It would now appear that Caldwell might be one of those.

Caldwell, a 26 year old central defender and Scottish International joined Sunderland on a free transfer from Newcastle in 2004. A Celtic fan born in Stirling, he rapidly established himself in the Sunderland team but an injury in 2006 kept him out of action and his opportunities under manager Roy Keane have been limited. The 6 foot defender also has a perhaps more famous brother, Gary, A Celtic player with more caps for Scotland.Up to January 2006 Steve had attained 8 caps, as against Gary's 17.

During the period of 2001-2004 he also had loan spells with Blackpool, Bradford City (2 spells) and Leeds.

Another thing we need to establish is whether he is a Stephen or a Steven since all the websites vary in their naming policy so until then he will be called Steve!

Oh heck this doesnt sound promising from ic Newcastle site:'However, Steve Caldwell's proposed move to Burnley looks in doubt tonight. The former Newcastle defender is understood to have failed to agree personal terms with the Lancashire outfit, despite the two clubs agreeing a fee earlier this week.'
