Dyche Relegation Reaction

Dyche Relegation Reaction

Manager Sean Dyche had mixed feelings today as Burnley picked up the win they needed, and still found out that other results had confirmed our relegation.

Audio - Dyche On Players & Fans

Speaking to the Official Site following the one nil win over Hull today, Dyche firstly hailed the fans for their efforts and backing all season long.

'I must mention the fans because they have been incredible this season. They have stood by us all the way through it, particularly in the early part of the season when we couldn`t get that win. When you look around the country there are fans going crazy at their team and I take great pride in how the fans here have conducted themselves all season.'

Moving onto the game itself he knew what a challenge it was going to be to avoid the drop at this stage of the season, but sadly the win just came a game too late for us to really make a late run given results elsewhere relegating us today by a single point as we sit seven shy with only six left to play for.

'It would have been going into folklore if we could have got it over the line in these last three games. The thing I was pleased with today was there was no thought if the 'what ifs`. Once again I am absolutely delighted with their mentality, and in the end it`s close but no cigar for us. There has been a great resilience from the players to keep going around the country and putting in performances, but just not enough unfortunately to get us over the line.'

Dyche goes on to repeat that all season we've been competitive in almost every game and he's been pleased with the way the team have been largely on the front foot, full of belief and spirit and he's been pleased with the quality we've shown - there just hadn't been enough quality or luck in front of the net and it's been the thing that has cost us.

'There has been no lack of effort or belief. We have kept fighting, demanding and believing. There are lots of good things, but underlining all that is the disappointment of not retaining our status in the Premier League. We have fought very hard to get where we have and for it to go away is disappointing.'

Whilst he wouldn't be overly drawn on his own future at the club he did go on to say that he was confident the foundations were firmly in place at the club now for us to have a proper stab at promotion again at the first time of asking in 2015-16.

'Overall, we make sense of it all move forward. I can`t even tell you how much better shape this club is now from two-and-a-half years ago. We had just jumped from 16th to 13th in the Championship. Well we`ve come a long way in that time and there will naturally be a reflection over time. But right now it`s disappointment because I wholeheartedly believed - along with my staff, players and the fans - that we could stay in the Premier League again.'
