'If It's Football, It's Vital'

From Preston Downer to Blackpool Upper?

Burnley suffered their first pre-season loss of the summer on Tuesday night against Preston at Deepdale. Lukas Jutkiewicz had given the Clarets the perfect start after just 15 minutes. The goal came after Jones managed to dispossess Bailey Wright to feed the former Middlesbrough striker. In a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, the Juke made no mistake slotting the ball underneath Jamie Jones as he came charging out to put the Clarets 1-0 up. It was nothing less than the Clarets deserved after dominating these early stages. It was enough to give the Clarets a lead at half-time but it didn`t last long with Alan Browne equalising for the hosts at the start of the second half! This was becoming an entertaining game and both sides were certainly up for it with the match at times somewhat juicy and spicy with players developing somewhat of a temper at times. The Clarets had started the second-half as they finished the first so still lined up as follows:

Matt Gilks, Kieran Trippier, Michael Duff, Jason Shackell, Ben Mee, Dean Marney, Danny Ings, David Jones, Matt Taylor, Lukas Jutkiewicz,, Scott Arfield

This could be the line-up in contention for the Premier League opening game against Chelsea but that could depend on the recovery rate of some of our injured players.

After the hour mark both Wallace (61 mins) and Sordell (65 mins) made an appearance after coming on from the bench to replace Taylor and the Juke respectively but it looked like the game was heading for an inevitable draw. Sadly for the 1,881 Burnley fans that had travelled the short distance to Deepdale there was a sting in the tail. With less than two minutes of normal time remaining, Josh Brownhill scored an unstoppable 30-yard free kick to give the hosts a 2-1 lead which they held onto although Burnley came close to finding a last ditch equaliser in stoppage time. A long range effort from Jones was not quite enough though to beat his namesake in the Preston goal.

Of course there were now the inevitable jibes from the home fans about 'Premier League` and 'having a laff` but despite the defeat the reality is that the Clarets will face Chelsea and Manchester United at home in their opening three games with Swansea away sandwiched in between and that does seem a little bit more juicy than the thoughts of playing Notts Country, Rochdale and Scunthorpe! Rock on Preston we are the ones having the laugh!

Oh well time to put the midweek defeat behind us now and focus on our last friendly on the road of the summer. We now travel a little bit further down the road and onto Bloomfield Road to play Blackpool this Saturday.

Burnley went into the Preston game without a number of players through injury. Tom Heaton, Michael Kightly and Steven Reid are yet to feature in pre-season and it will be interesting to see if they have recovered in time for the Blackpool game. It certainly looks like Tom Heaton will miss out again despite signing a new deal this week. He seems to be suffering from a persistent calf problem. Steven Reid also could make his debut though following news that he looks to have overcome a minor thigh injury. Ashley Barnes might also return for the first time since the 8-0 victory over FC Grossklein after recovering from a groin strain.

We could therefore expect a similar line up to the Preston game which would mean something like this:

Matt Gilks, Kieran Trippier, Michael Duff, Jason Shackell, Ben Mee, Dean Marney, Danny Ings, David Jones, Matt Taylor, Lukas Jutkiewicz,, Scott Arfield

Subs: Alex Cisak, Danny Lafferty, Luke O`Neill, Kevin Long, Steven Reid, Steven Hewitt, Ross Wallace, Ashley Barnes, Marvin Sordell, Tom Anderson, Jason Gilchrist.

The hosts have been under pressure from the fans during the summer break with barely any players to make up a full team. At one point they had just eight players in the first-team squad but that now seems to have changed after a busy week for Blackpool gaffe, Jose Riga. In the past seven days, four new players have been signed up. One of those players is former Clarets loan, Nathan Delfouneso but they have also brought in Costa Rica midfielder Jose Miguel Cubero and further bolstered midfield with the signings of Jacob Mellis and Tomasz Cywka. Peter Clarke is another signing in defence.

This will be only Blackpool`s second friendly of the summer following a 4-0 win away at Penrith earlier this week.

The Lancashire derby will kick off at 3pm
