A Duff Deal? Not for Michael!

Michael Duff is now the only remaining survivor of our last Premier League campaign in 2009-10 but the 36 year old will now get the chance of a second go in the top flight after this week accepting a new one year deal. He agreed the deal this week on the eve of a return to pre-season training and will now enter his 11th season on Burnley`s books.

Duff joined the Clarets for just 30,000 in July 2004 from Cheltenham Town. The Belfast-born, Northern Ireland international last season notched up his 300th appearance for the Clarets and has been a stalwart in the centre of defence (and earlier in his career at right back). The veteran defender also recently completed his Pro Licence coaching badges but there is no coaching role involved in his new deal.

To date, Duff has played under five Burnley managers. He was brought to Turf Moor by Steve Cotterill who was previously gaffer at Cheltenham and he has been an influential player since under Owen Coyle, Brian Laws, Eddie Howe and Sean Dyche.

Talking about his new deal, Duff said:

"I spoke to the manager at the end of last season and he said he wanted to keep me. Since then it`s just been a case of sorting out the details.

"I wanted to stay, obviously, because it`s another chance in the Premier League and following the season we had getting there last season.

"It took me until I was 30 to get there the first time around and then I was injured for the first three months.

"That, and getting relegated, made it a disappointment, so to get another opportunity at 36, when you think it may have gone, was something to grab with both hands - and with the team we had last season, plus a few additions, I`m sure we can kick on and surprise a few people."

"Last season I played every game I was fit and felt I probably had my best season here.

"I still feel fit and although people might say that at my age I should be retiring, as a lot of my mates have, I feel good.

"The physical data we get from every game comes back and I`m no better or worse than anyone else in the team, so I feel I look after myself and I`m looking forward to the challenge."
