It has been a busy week at the Rumour Mill!
The first link of a player coming to the club hit the Rumour Mill on Monday and perhaps it was fuelled by World Cup fever! Madjid Bougherra (pictured above) is currently playing out in Brazil for Algeria and is captain of the side. It is thought he is putting himself in the shop window with a view to moving back to the UK. The 31 year old centre back has previously played in the UK for Crewe (whilst on loan from French club, Gueugnon), Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic and Rangers. Bougherra joined Rangers, signing a four-year deal for £2.5 million in July 2008. However in March 2011 he announced that he intended to leave Rangers at the end of the 2010-11 season after turning down a new contract. In August 2011 Bougherra moved to Qatar side Lekhwiya for £1.7 million but left the club in May this year and is now a free agent.
A number of Premier League clubs including Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers and Leicester City as well as the Clarets are thought to be interested in the defender.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Bougherra confirmed he would like to move back to England.
'I would definitely favour a move to England if the right opportunity comes up, he said
'I am not aware of too much it at this stage about my future as I am thinking purely about Algeria and the World Cup, but I do know of offers from Turkey and France.'
Well our reported interest in David Nugent also refuses to die down! It had been thought the former Burnley loan striker would sign a new deal with his current club, Leicester City but it looks like talks may have stalled hence the continued speculation concerning a move back to Turf Moor. According to reports the Foxes have offered him a one-year deal only, while other clubs could be prepared to give the 29 year old a two-year deal. Sources in the East Midlands also suggest that a deal to stay at Leicester is now firmly in the balance despite at one point looking like a formality following the Foxes automatic promotion to the top flight as Champions last season. Middlesbrough, Hull City, West Ham United and Swansea City are also believed to be keeping an eye on developments.
Premier league new boys Burnley and Championship club Wigan are also looking to sign Preston North End winger Chris Humphrey, according to Sky Sports. The 26 year old Jamaica international joined Preston from Motherwell on a free transfer at the beginning of last season on a two-year deal and is currently entering the final 12 months of his contract. He came through Walsall and West Brom`s youth system originally before signing for Shrewsbury Town in July 2006. Humphrey joined Motherwell in July 2009 before coming to Deepdale in June 2013. . It was reported that Leeds United were looking to make the winger their first summer signing but they now face significant competition with a Premier League club by all accounts assessing the situation!
Could the pacy and skilful winger become the third Preston wideman to make the short journey from Deepdale to Turf Moor following the capture of Keith Treacy and Ross Wallace? Who knows!
It is perhaps inevitable we will continue to be linked with players known to Sean Dyche whilst at Watford. The latest is current Bolton striker, Marvin Sordell. Bolton paid Watford £3.2million for the England Under 21 international on January transfer deadline day, 2012 but his two-and-a-half year stay at the Reebok has been somewhat of a nightmare. Sordell has managed just 16 starts in all competitions in 30 months amongst his 29 appearances, scoring only eight goals. The 23 year old spent the whole of last season out on loan to Charlton Athletic. At the Valley he suffered a hamstring injury and was out for a lengthy period managing just 22 starts. He did notch up eight goals though including an impressive hat-trick against the Owls. According to the local Bolton press, the Clarets are thought to have held informal talks with the club although Burnley have confirmed they have not made any formal bid. Sordell still has 12 months of his contract to run but it is thought Bolton gaffer, Dougie Freedman could be tempted into selling an unsettled player in order to boost his chances of signing Middlesbrough forward Lukas Jutkiewic.
One player you might not have heard of is Tommy Oar. Oar is a 22 year old Australian international winger and attacking midfielder who currently plays for FC Utrecht in the Dutch Eredivisie. He joined the Dutch club in January 2010 from Brisbane Roar. Could Oar be yet another Burnley target? Well there have been somewhat tenuous links but I would say this one was not a strong possibility.
Let's finish with the inevitable speculation surrounding a potential player leaving the club, Danny Ings. Despite club announcements that Ings was not for sale, Newcastle and Southampton in particular continue to be linked but things took a twist this week with suggestions that not only English clubs have targeted the England Under 21 international! It would appear if rumours are true that the German Bundesliga could beckon for Ings with both Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg keeping an eye on developments. Everton and West Ham are also interested in the 21 year old according to the media. We shall see!!
