Both our main strikers are on International duty during the break with Danny Ings selected for England Under 21 and Sam Vokes for Wales. There is some slightly worrying news regarding Sam Vokes who has picked up and injury but Danny Ings made his debut this week for the England Under 21s.
Ings made his England under 21 debut in Thursday night`s European Championship qualifier against San Marino in Serravalle. The 21 year old former Bournemouth striker came on as a 65th-minute substitute. England thumped the young minnows 4-0 but Ings was not one of the scorers. San Marino were reduced to 10 men just before half time and Harry Kane scored a hat-trick. Danny will be hoping he impressed Gareth Southgate enough to feature in their next European Championship qualifier at home to Lithuania at Portman Road on Tuesday 15th October next week.
Meanwhile, Wales beat Macedonia 1-0 in Cardiff on Friday night in their Group A World Cup qualifying game but they had to do so without Burnley striker, Sam Vokes. Simon Church's second-half goal was enough to give the Welsh victory and move them to fourth place above Scotland. Chris Coleman had called Vokes up to the squad but he was only able to do light training on Wednesday after suffering an ankle injury and was not fit enough to play against Macedonia. Obviously with Burnley so light on strikers at the moment any injuries of this type are bound to make the manager and fans sweat. Danny Ings is the only other recognised first team starter up front although we do have the inexperienced Ryan Noble waiting in the wings. It sounds though like this injury is not serious and that Vokes could still feature in Wales next Group A game next Tuesday away to Belgium.
Other Clarets have also been on international duty. Danny Lafferty is in the Northern Ireland squad for their two World Cup qualifiers. He was an unused sub in their game in Baku against Azerbaijan on Friday, and saw his team go down 2-0 to one of the minnows of the group. He will be hoping gaffer Michael O'Neill selects him next Tuesday (October 15th) for their last qualifying game against Israel in Ramat Gan .
David Edgar has also received a call to play for Canada. The Canucks play Australia in a friendly at Fulham`s Craven Cottage next Tuesday night so at least he won`t be jet lagged on his return this time!
Midfielder, Cameron Howieson meanwhile is in the Americas with the New Zealand All Whites for their friendly games against Chivas USA and Trinidad & Tobago. He will hope to feature in the games against Major League Soccer`s Chivas USA today (Saturday, 12 October), then against Trinidad & Tobago in Port of Spain in another international friendly on Tuesday, October 15.
