Barnsley..No Not Burnley...Get Cofie!

Barnsley have signed former Burnley youth striker John Cofie on a one-year deal with the option of a second.

The 20-year-old was released by Manchester United earlier this summer having spent time on loan with Sheffield United and Notts County last season.

Cofie, who never played a first team game for United, moved to Old Trafford from Burnley at the age of 14 in 2007 having been hailed as a great prospect. In truth he never realised his potential.

The Tykes though have given him a lifeline!

'He's a signing with immense talent and potential,' Tykes boss David Flitcroft told BBC Radio Sheffield.

'He lost his way a little bit and we've been able to pick him up. I'm excited to be working with him.

'We've got to work with him and show him his objectives for the team. We'll look to develop him as a central striker.'

Good luck John!!

Good luck to the lad! Said it before, had he not been starstruck with Old Trafford would he have been better placed staying wih Burnley by now? Mmmmm

Barnsley fan here. I think he would have been better off sticking with Burnley and trying to fight for an opportunity in the first team instead of playing Academy/Reserve football for 2/3 years then going out on loan to League One clubs then being released and left to feel a little crap inside. Honestly glad we have him now. Maybe David Flitcroft will reignite his potential and bring it out of him.

Be interesting to see how well he plays against the Clarets this coming season LL!! Hope he can get his career back on track with the Tykes.

If I remember at the time we got a fair whack of money for him and pretty sure we were offered a friendly as part of the deal that failed to happen, watched him a few times and he doesn't lack in pace, it's a shame these guys get snapped up by the larger teams but when they come calling at that age who are you going to go with that said they don't get the chance of first team football and are filtered down the leagues, I will be keeping an eye on him good luck John
