Heaton Rifles In To Sign Burnley Deal!

Heaton Rifles In To Sign Burnley Deal!

Burnley FC have officially announced that goalkeeper Tom Heaton will sign for the club

The 27 year old will arrive on a free transfer from Bristol City on July 1st when his Robins contract expires having agreed a two-year deal with a further 12-month option with the Clarets.

The former England U21 international becomes manager Sean Dyche`s first summer signing and he will link up with the Clarets on their return to pre-season training becoming the club's number one keeper following the departure of both Lee Grant and Brian Jensen.

Talking about his new keeper, a delighted Dyche said:

'Tom is someone we knew all about at Watford and we have monitored his progress since then.

"We have had him watched several times in the past year, he`s just had a really good season in very tough circumstances at Bristol and he recently played very well here at Turf Moor, as every Burnley fan will know.

"He is a good technician, he has great pedigree, having coming out of Manchester United and is a good age and willing to learn."

Something you might not know about Heaton is that his family hail from the area and are lifelong Burnley fans and season ticket holders.

'This is a fantastic football club with huge potential, said Heaton

"I spoke to the manager and staff, who I met before when he was at Watford, and I also know the goalkeeping coach, Billy Mercer, so everything fits.

"The history of the club and the family brings the nostalgia back, so I think it`s a great time for me to come and sign here.

"Hopefully the club is moving in the right direction and we can do something special"

The 6ft 2in Chester-born keeper started his career with Manchester United but finished up having a number of loan spells including at clubs, Swindon, Royal Antwerp, Cardiff City, QPR, Rochdale and Wycombe Wanderers.

After being released by United, Heaton returned to Cardiff in July 2010 this time on a permanent deal but then found himself continually playing second fiddle to first-choice keeper David Marshall. He was released at the end of the 2011-12 season after rejecting a new contract. Heaton signed a one year deal for the Robins in the summer of 2012 but was unable to prevent the club's relegation to League One this season. Bristol City were keen to offer him another contract but he turned them down.
