Rumour Mill: Duffy on loan plus Austin interest?

If you believe the Irish media, Burnley are lining up a loan move for 20 year old Ireland U21 Everton centre back Shane Duffy.

The Derry-born defender has been unable to become a regular in the Everton first team this season and it is believed, Toffees gaffer, David Moyes could be prepared to send Duffy out on loan.

Duffy had a brief spell on loan at Turf Moor in March 2011 on an initial 28-day loan with the possibility of an extension until the end of the 2010-11 season. He made his debut for the Clarets in April 2011 in the 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town, playing the full 90 minutes but that was his only appearance.

The following season Duffy joined Scunthorpe on loan in September 2011 making a total of 19 appearances for the Iron before the Toffees recalled him in January 2012, due to an injury to Phil Jagielka. Duffy duly made his Premier League debut for Everton at White Hart Lane in January 2012, coming on as a substitute for the final 30 minutes but has only made a handful of first-team appearances since joining the club as a youth player from local Derry club, Foyle Harps in November 2008.

The Clarets are desperate to tighten up their defence, having now leaked the most goals in the Championship. They have conceded 22 goals and yet paradoxically have also scored 21 goals the highest in the division thanks mainly to the highest scorer in the country at the moment, Charlie Austin who has netted 15 so far this season. Is Duffy a good enough candidate to tighten up the defence? We will let our posters comment on that but one thing is certain it is becoming vitally important we hold onto Austin in the January window. A number of Premier League clubs are now rumoured to be sniffing about including Reading,Fulham and West Brom.

Have not got a clue about Duffy but anything offering an improvement in defence is welcome at the moment. As to Charlie, it is inevitable that any prolific goal scorer is going to attract attention and the Board should give short shrift to any enquiries, although 20 million would be tempting if the Board spent the money shoring up the defence. In my dreams, the Board spending any substantial money on players that is.

There has to be some experienced defenders out there surely, I would prefer Mee going into CB and start with Mills or Lafferty at LB, regarding Austin I don't think Reading,Fulham and West Brom is that much of a step up and could they afford him it would take a damn hefty price to get him more than Fletcher and Jay Rod went for but then we are stuffed again!!

My thought was that it should be an experienced defender to 8c8. I would be surprised if we didnt see interest in Charlie in January - if we dont this would probably mean he has stopped scoring.

A intrest for Charlie is inevitable and he won't stay at Turf Moor if the defense will continue to open the way straight to Grant who isn't much better. Anyway, Duffy could be an interesting reinforcement, but not necessarily at the back where we need ROUTINE and stability, not potential.

More interest in Austin according to Sky Sports yesterday-Sky Sports understands several Premier League clubs are chasing Burnley hot-shot Charlie Austin. Austin is currently the top scorer in the country after netting 15 goals in 12 games for Burnley. The 23-year-old's outstanding start to the season has not gone unnoticed by clubs higher up the football pyramid. The former Swindon man has established himself as one of the best strikers outside the Premier League with his goalscoring exploits for Swindon and Burnley over the last couple of years. Newcastle and Aston Villa are both thought to be keeping tabs on Austin's situation as they weigh up moves for the striker when the January transfer window reopens. Magpies boss Alan Pardew is thought to be a long-term admirer of Austin having watched him in action on several occasions, while Villa chief Paul Lambert could be in the marker for striking reinforcements as doubts continue to surround the future of Darren Bent. .

The more success we have, cough, the more pressure will come on the Board to sell successful players. The Board have to show more resolve and ambition, if not we face a future of increasing failure, lower gates, decreasing income and oblivion in the lower reaches of the football pyramid.

Howe bought Mee as a centre back, if he is pants lets loan him out. Why play him at left back ahead of the two left backs Howe signed Lafferty and Mills. Has our manager lost the plot? Last season his first game of the season cb pairing was Bikey and Mee and they looked good.....How did Howe get from that to where we are now......you couldn't make it up....

I though we all agreed Eddie had done a fine job on the defence closed season, and that we just needed to sort midfield out ?.......... NO ? owh how about the strike force..... ummm 15 from 21 goals coming from just one source, and the half wits on the board considering yet another " can't afford to turn it down offer on Charlie" WHEN WILL CLARETS FANS REALISE THE PROBLEM IS AS MUCH OFF THE PITCH AS IT IS ON IT...... Time for honestly clarets, the re jig to our defensive has not resolved issues, despite having good players at our disposal, some of Eddies signings are shocking poor including Tracy but equally Vokes. Our midfield has been a problem since Coyle left, and without Charlie we don't have a striker that seems capable of scoring a goal, we have a short sighted board who let's face it, have had more money than any other board in the history of Burnley Football club, we have match day ticket prices that make you bleed for the eye balls and we haven't got a pot to ***** in or a window to throw it out of!.......... now come on tell me clarets you still this board are doing a good job? 145M in three years and this is the sum total of our worth ...... do me a favor, were in real trouble and if you don't know that then forgive me, but you're in real trouble. Time for changes we need some resources quickly, but not at the expense of selling our better players we also need to ask if the "youth"| idea is working..... all I see is a disjointed group of footballers aspiring to be called a team !

Only you would complain about scoring goals when we are the top scorers in the Championship hollins.

The Board must go? The management must go? The offence must go? The midfield must go? The defence and keeper must go? Nothing is more likely to produce success?

Oh dear, now the new look home page of the official club website must go too, with 68% saying they don't like it. Unusually I am in the majority on this one.
