Mahon's High Hopes

Burnley midfielder Alan Mahon beleives the club can mount a promotion challenge, following the example of his former club Wigan Athletic.

Another promotion for Mahon would make it a hat-trick at this level, as he looks for his chance to make an impact at the top level, following limited opportunities with the Latics and Blackburn.

He said: 'I've been fortunate enough to get promotion from this league with Blackburn and Wigan and it would be amazing to achieve that for a third time with Burnley.

'I can't see why not because we have the same sort of nucleus of players as we had at Wigan, where quite a lot of players came through from the lower leagues.

'The manager there, Paul Jewell, didn't spend a lot other than signing Jason Roberts and Nathan Ellington, but with the work ethic he instilled into the lads and the team bonding, that was all the catalyst they needed.'

You've certainly had a good start to the season. But can you maintain it?

Well we still only have a squad of 20 players although seem to have more options than last season. Will see if we get in any so-called loans before the next Transfer Window opens in January. If we are top 10 by Xmas I would fancy our chances providing we dont sell any of our key players like the last two seasons [Blake/Chaplow-Jan 05,Ade Akinbiyi-Jan 06]
