Burnley X-Files-The Recent Activity!

Burnley X-Files-The Recent Activity!

A number of our former players have found new clubs recently and we look at some of these including the players released by Eddie Howe at the end of last season starting with Clarke Carlisle

Carlisle to York

Our former centre back and vice-captain Clarke Carlisle, signed for York City at the end of last month. The Minstermen were promoted into League Two from the Blue Square Premier League last season.

York manager Gary Mills said :

'I'm delighted to get a good player like Clarke into the club. With that he brings a lot of experience, a lot of leadership and a lot of quality.'

Carlisle, who is also of course chairman of the PFA said: 'I'm absolutely delighted. You know, after the whole of pre-season has passed I was umming and ahhing about what to do with my personal future, and then I thought the chance had passed because everyone had finalised their squads.

'I spoke to the gaffer and his plans for the club sound really exciting and I'm just delighted to be back in the fray.'

Carlisle now 32 joined Burnley from Watford in August 2007 after being signed by Steve Cotterill for £200,000 and agreeing a three-year contract. He went on to make over 130 appearances for the Clarets. Under Eddie Howe though, Carlisle found it hard to get a regular place in the first team and in July 2011 he joined his hometown club Preston North End on loan for the duration of the 2011-12 season. Following the appointment of new manager Graham at Deepdale though Carlisle struggled to fit the new training regime in with his commitments as chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association and his loan deal was cancelled by mutual consent on 31 January 2012. Northampton manager, Aidy Boothroyd though signed Carlisle on loan for the remainder of the season on the same day he left Deepdale. Boothroyd of course was also his manager at Watford. All Clarets fans knew though that Carlisle`s days at Turf Moor were numbered and that he would most probably leave in the summer. Eddie Howe duly released Carlisle in May 2012 after the expiry of his contract. Northampton were keen to bring him to Sixfields on a permanent deal but Carlisle turned down a contract offer finally signing for York City on the 30th August last month penning a deal until January 2013.

Full of Easton Promise at Dundee?

Another defender released by Eddie Howe this summer was left-back Brian Easton. He too has now found a new club after joining Scottish Premier league club, Dundee this week. Dens boss Barry Smith was delighted to have concluded the deal, saying:

''We first tried to get in contact with Brian earlier in the summer so I am really happy the deal is now done.

''I am always looking to strengthen the squad if the opportunity arises and Brian's arrival at the club will bring even more competition for places.

''He has done well in the past at both SPL level and in the Championship down south so he comes with a good pedigree.''

Easton said: ''I'm happy to be a Dundee player. I played pretty regularly in the Championship last season and I've also played in the SPL for Hamilton, so hopefully I can put that experience to good use here.

''The boys made me welcome at my first training session this morning and it looked to me like there's plenty of quality here.''

The 24-year-old Glaswegian joined the Clarets from Hamilton Academicals in July 2009 after penning a three year contract. It never really worked out for him at Turf Moor though and in January 2010, Hamilton welcomed back Easton on loan until the end of the 2009-10 season. Easton did not make his league debut for Burnley until October 2010 against Barnsley when first choice left back Danny Fox became injured. Easton`s chance came when Fox left for Southampton and in the end the Scotland Under 21 international notched up 33 appearances for the Clarets before being released by the club in May 2012 after the expiry of his contract.

Amougou Still On His Bikey Looking For Work!

Just to complete the picture, Andre Amougou our other first team defender released by Eddie Howe in the summer is now the only player still looking for a club. This is perhaps surprising considering the Cameroon international`s career and talents. Still only 27 the former Reading centre back seems to have had few offers in the summer after being released by Burnley following the expiry of his contract. He did have a trial at Middlesbrough at the end of August following an injury to former Burnley loan, Rhys Williams but it would appear Tony Mowbray has decided not to take things further. Amougou was also reported to have rejected a contract at Scottish Football League Third Division troubled club Rangers at the end of last month.

Hines at Bradford City

Former West Ham striker, Zavon Hines has also found a new club after joining League 2 Bradford City last month. Hines signed a one year contract with Burnley in August 2011 with the option of a second year. A tribunal had to decide the compensation payable to West Ham due to his age and a figure estimated at about £250,000 was finally agreed. It just never worked out for Hines though at Turf Moor and he joined League One club Bournemouth in March 2012 on loan until the end of the 2011-12 season. Howe decided not to take up the second year option on his contract and he was released this summer. The 23 year old England Under 21 international had a short trial for Swindon before agreeing a one year contract with the Bantams on the 18th August last month.

No Pain, Know Gainsborough for Knowles!

20 year old former Clarets young gun striker, Dominic Knowles has joined Blue Square Bet North club Gainsborough Trinity this week. Knowles came through Burnley's youth system and had been a regular in the reserves last season after two years as a professional at Turf Moor. He failed to make a first team appearance though for the Clarets; the nearest being on the bench for the last game of the 2010/11 season against Cardiff. Released by Eddie Howe at the end of last season he had trials at both Stevenage and York during the summer. Knowles had been hoping for a contract in particular with npower League Two newcomers York City but it would appear he failed to impress Minstermen boss Gary Mills enough to earn a contract.

Where Oster Been Since I Saw Thee? Barnet?

Meanwhile League 2 Barnet signed Wales international and former Clarets midfield player, John Oster this Friday. The 33 year old started his career at Grimsby before moving to Everton for £1.5m in 1997. He then joined Sunderland for £1m in 1999 and had loan spells at Barnsley, Grimsby and Leeds before joining Burnley in January 2005 until the end of the season. Oster made just 15 appearances for the Clarets and in August 2005 he later signed for Reading helping them reach the Premiership before joining Crystal Palace in 2008. In 2009, he joined Doncaster Rovers before being released at the end of last season after his contract expired.

VR expressed the view on more than one occasion last year that Eddie being unable to get through to Andre suggested room for improvement in Eddie's people-management skills. But, with a skillful player like Andre still clubless, I am starting to wonder whether maybe it's not just Eddie who considers Andre to be difficult to manage? But I note that The Rangers of the Fourth Tier were willing to take a punt, so maybe I should wonder less? Dunno.

Andre is now safely at Boro and his wage demands must have been at last thrashed out. If he fails under Mowbray then EH will have made the right decision, only time will tell for my favourite ex Burnley player.
