Burnley Clean Up in Bath!

Burnley Clean Up in Bath!

Burnley beat Blue Square Bet Conference South club Bath City 3-1 last night in the first match of their South West Tour maintaining their 100% record of pre-season friendly wins after beating Altrincham and Bury in the previous two games.

Martin Paterson (knee) missed out on selection due to a slight knee injury but Michael Duff recovered from a knock in time to start.

The Clarets therefore lined up as follows for the first-half :

Jensen, Trippier, Duff, Mee, Lafferty, Stanislas, Marney, McCann, Treacy, Ings, Austin.

The Clarets started brightly enough playing with pace and enjoying possession in these early stages. Stanislas just failed to open the scoring after his left footed shot flew just past the far post.

Bath though were punching above their weight and keeping the Clarets in check. Lafferty had to cut out a threatening cross from Aaron Brown before joining in the attack and linking well with Chris McCann. McCann`s cross found Austin and his header was deflected over the ball after Bath`s Danny Ball got in the way.

Lafferty and McCann then linked well again to set up Austin. His effort though fell to Ings and his shot was saved by Bath keeper Glyn Garner with just 15 minutes played. .

It was Ings again who nearly opened the scoring this time with a header following a Trippier cross but the ball flew over the angle. .

Burnley continued to press but had to be alert to the odd Bath attacking move. Jensen made a routine save following a volley from Adam Connolly with Bath determined to frustrate the Clarets as the break approached. Following a blocked shot by Austin, Lafferty might have done better passing to Ings but instead attempted a lob that flew wide of target.

Goalless it remained then at half-time and despite this Eddie Howe decided not to make any changes for the start of the second half. Burnley continued to press though for the opener and Ings came close with another header following a Lafferty cross.

The deadlock though was finally broken on 56 minutes when Ings driving forward laid off the ball to Treacy. The Irishman who has found a new lease of life at the club in the summer let rip with a shot that flew inside the post with substitute keeper Jason Mellor trying his best but failing to keep it out.

Now it was time for Eddie Howe to wring the changes and he made some wholesale ones on the hour mark. On came new signing Sam Vokes who had just signed a three-year deal with the club that day and the new line-up now looked like this;

Jensen, Long, Edgar, Shackell, O'Neill, Hewitt, MacDonald, Mills, Porter, Wallace, Vokes

Burnley though suddenly lost their one goal lead after Bath equalised when substitute Adie Harris lobbed a bemused Jensen. It was certainly a bizarre goal considering it was scored by accident! Kieran Trippier was getting treatment after going down injured with Eddie Howe now taking the opportunity to change the team around. Restarting the game, Harris was sportingly trying to play the ball back to the Beast but instead lobbed the ball over him and into the net! The referee though let the goal stand but thankfully Burnley`s lead was soon restored.

Bath were unable to contain George Porter and he ran clean through unchallenged towards goal to unleash a shot. Mellor saved his first attempt though but had no answer to his second

Debutant for a second time Sam Vokes too was getting in on the act and had two good chances to score. He could only poke a Joseph Mills' cross just wide of the near post though before making a bit of a hash with an attempt from a Wallace pass. He was trying to bend his shot inside the far corner but got it all wrong! Burnley though now were in control of the game and Porter nearly made it 3-1 after the keeper turned his shot round the post. It was left to Wallace though to wrap things up after his left footed daisy cutter flew inside the near post to make the final score 3-1 to the Clarets.

It was a good day for the Clarets with the development squad also winning their game against local club Padiham at the Arbories. It needed a late goal from Shay McCartan though to win 2-1 after coming from behind. Padiham took the lead on 30 minutes and looked likely to win until midfielder, John Goddard, a trialist released by Reading equalised with just 14 minutes of the game remaining after unleashing a shot from distance.

Burnley`s winner came in the 89th minute when McCartan latched on to a loose ball in the box and after a block thumped the ball home!

Conor Mitchell, Aryn Williams, Tom Anderson, Alex Coleman (Jack Errington), Joe Walsh(trialist ex-Swansea), Adam Evans, John Goddard(trialist ex-Reading), Archie Love, Shay McCartan, Mehdi Lazaar (Luke Gallagher), Joe Jackson (Jason Gilchrist). Sub not used: Callum Jakovlevs.

How bizarre, the Development squad team that I think played against Padium are being credited with a win over Bath...very puzzling.....
