'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Shackell is New Burnley Captain!

It has just been announced on the Official Club website that Jason Shackell replaces Chris McCann as the new Burnley captain for next season!

There was a hint of this when he led out the team for the first pre-season friendly against Altrincham at Moss Lane this afternoon despite Chris McCann starting the game

"Jason is a leader. We've seen that in training, and in the game he was a very, very good talker on the football pitch and off the pitch, said Howe.

"I think he's got everyone's respect and he will lead the team

"It's no criticism of Chris at all. Chris is a fantastic player and a wonderful person as well. He's a leader in his own right, but I just feel that it's taken a bit of pressure off him and enables him to concentrate on his own game and being the player that we know he is.

"With Shacks I felt it was the right thing to do."

Have to say support this 100% and I think this will really really help McCann get back on track (unless he is off to Norwich!!)

This decision has made me feel so much more confident despite my misgivings on the ambition side! This really could work with a understrength squad!

Shackell is an excellent choice of captain and has so much experience, hopefully this will be a big weight off of McCanns shoulders as well.

Totally agree Adam! Its like we have a new midfielder on the books too (potentially)

Totally agree with the decision and glad it has been addressed, anyone know who was captain in the second-half against Altrincham?

I assume Duff but it wasn't announced!

"Understrength squad"?!? Really?! On what basis? I would argue it's one of the biggest we've had in terms of people who can / could actually play... Anyway, back to the good news: the correct decision, which will hopefully breathe new life into CMc!

You will see its understrength..just like it was last season.. when you look at the back of 'Claret & You 'every home game and see what the opposition have got! It will become even more evident in January when no doubt we will sell our best assets on the pretence its a 'good bit of business' on the way to midtable mediocrity again! Trust me,it happens every season only this time we have a better captain who might give us a better chance to punch even more above our weight! ;-)

I maybe having a memory lapse but cant remember who we sold last January ?

The damage had already been done in the summer with the failure to sign Cork and the loss of Fox, Mears, Eagles and Elliott and of course the inevitable loss of JayRod was only put on hold in January for six months. It will be interesting this January to see if we can hold on to the likes of Trippier, Austin and McCann

Good decision by Eddie. Not only a good new captain who will lead strongly, but more than likely a return to form for Chris without the shackles of the captaincy.
WelshClaret
Like what you did there.. SHACKELLs of captaincy. ? lol ;-)
turfmanphil
Seems a good decision. I remember Steve Caldwell being given the club captaincy soon after joining the club - that worked out pretty well!

Yep, Dale an outsider coming in with fresh ideas and not carrying any baggage can often reap dividends! Let's hope so here, he definitely sounds the part!
