Shackell Signs In!

28 year old defender, Jason Shackell has signed for the Clarets for an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £1,1 million. Shackell has been one of Eddie Howe`s targets for sometime but at one point Derby County look determined to hold on their centre back and captain with reports that the club had turned down two bids from Burnley reported to be about £800k-£1m.

Burnley have managed to stave off the challenge from both Cardiff City and Leicester City in order to capture their man. The former Barnsley, Wolves and Norwich defender has signed a four year contract and will be available for the first pre-season training session which starts this Friday.

Excellent signing and the first one of the summer with proven ability in the Championship [Edited by turfmanphil]

Wow! To sign a valued and respected player from a club in a city the size of Derby is an achievement. I must ask my Rams-in-law what they think about this, and to get more context.

Should help to consolidate our position in the Championship until Eddies young guns get us in the Prem.

Lets be honest it is a shocking signing for all those who seem to like writing we have no ambition. As for me I think we could just have a ready made skipper and now it is up to Edgar, Duff and Mee to fill the CD No 2 spot. Maybe we will sell more season tickets now lol :)

I dont think we have ENOUGH ambition but I still called this an excellent signing. Sorry to disappoint VR! ;-) One swallow does not make a summer..and neither does one swallow with a few swallow chicks waiting to become adults!

Good signing this. My Donny mate tells me he is an excellent player, one of th ebest in the championship. I cannot remember seeing him play. I would imagine it will be shackell + Mee/Edgar as first choice next season.

You win nowt with kids , rings a bell!

Great signing. (Makes a change to sign a player from the same level we play in instead of kids from the conference and league 1 and 2) We will have competition for places at centre back which is what we need to keep players on their toes. Dead pleased.

A few days ago I had this one down as all but over, so fair play to Eddie for reigniting our chances and getting it over the line. Jason Shackell was always the biggest and most important signing we had to make, so to have made it so early is a bonus. We have really needed a big name center back with experience, so things are looking well for the new season. A couple of midfielders and we could have a chance.

The BBC article BL cites says Jason was aware Derby needed to get some money in. Not heard anything from my Rams-in-law yet, but doubtless I shall. On the official Bfc site Eddie is talking about Jason as a leader. Will there be a formal change in captaincy?

My chief Ram-in-law has emailed: "We have shafted ourselves twice on this deal: 1. Sold him too cheap (£3M should have been the selling price). 2. Barker is out all season so I assume that Mr Clough knows where to find a £5M player with his proceeds from Burnley. 3. Looking forward to another relegation battle season NOT." Couch says "Ouch, ouch, ouch". By the way, some credit is possibly due to Lee Hoos, who was brought in to help in these areas. Upwards and onwards the mighty Clarets!
Couch Potato
I would think with him being a leader he will lead , whether captain or not , but I think we would all agree that a leader is what we missed last season!

Adam Clayton signs for Huddersfield... you cant get them all I suppose. But who knows ? Maybe Eddie has another player of his ability in mind.

Gael Bigirimana joins Newcastle. Another one of our supposed targets gone elsewhere. I do hope we have other players in mind, and not from the lower leagues.

Derby fans up in arms according to local press-A NUMBER of Derby County supporters have asked for a refund on their season tickets following the sale of defender Jason Shackell to Burnley. Shackell signed on Thursday for £1.1m and his move has angered Rams fans. Derby have confirmed that some of those fans have contacted the club about returning their season tickets. A club spokesman said: "We have been in dialogue with 14 season ticket holders who have requested a refund on their season tickets for the 2012/13 season. "Derby County will continue to strive as a club that is a customer-friendly organisation and, whenever possible, we endeavour to fulfil the requirements and needs of our large supporter base. "The club remains firmly focused on securing the right transfer targets. Everyone is working hard behind the scenes to progress a number of possibilities and we hope to have some news on that shortly." (Derby Telegraph)
