That Was The Rumour Mill Week That Was...

Three players were linked with a move to Turf Moor last week and all three have previously been mentioned as Burnley targets in recent transfer windows.

They are also all defenders!

28 year old, Derby defender Jason Shackell appears to be high on Eddie Howe's list of targets.

The centre half, then a Barnsley player was linked with a move to Turf Moor only last summer. The Clarets though were understood to have been outbid by Derby County and he finished up at Pride Park for a reported fee of around £750,000.

Last January an unnamed club was reported to have made a £1 million bid for the Rams player and some thought this might have been Burnley. The local press though believe the bid came from another club

Derby were reluctant to sell the player back then but now reports suggest the club have approached Burnley suggesting they are now prepared to release the player. It would appear though they have an interest in bringing Martin Paterson to Pride Park as part of a player/cash deal for Shackell.

The club would be reluctant to release Paterson especially now since we have just lost one of our key strikers. Jay Rodriguez to Southampton. Pato too is thought to be reluctant to leave Turf Moor with a return to fitness currently his key priority.

With Burnley now £7 million richer following the sale of 'one of our own' they might now be tempted to bid for Shackell on a purely cash basis and may already have done so!

Derby chief executive Tom Glick told the Derby Telegraph:

"We've knocked back another bid for Jason Shackell.

"We felt it was nowhere near where it would need to be for us to give it serious consideration.

"We're not surprised about this as he had a great season for us and is a key player for us, in a key position.

"If a club was to come back with an increased valuation, we would take a look at it on its merit.

"Then, if we felt it did meet out valuation of the player, we would only sell if we had a suitable replacement lined up.'

Another player we were linked with last week was George Friend

Burnley are one of three clubs along with Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace reported to be keen on signing the 24 year old Doncaster Rovers defender.

Friend too is likely to relish a return to the Championship following Doncaster's relegation to League 1 last season.

The left back and centre half joined Wolves in 2008 and also had loan spells at Millwall, Southend, Scunthorpe and Exeter before joining Doncaster Rovers in 2010. Friend was made captain by Rovers boss Dean Saunders at the start of last season but he could not help his side avoid the drop.

Darren O'Dea was the third player to be linked last week.

A brief article in the Daily Star stated that Bolton, Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley were rivals to sign the Celtic defender.

The 25 year old Republic of Ireland international was hoping that Leeds would offer him a permanent deal in the summer following a loan spell at Elland Road last season but those hopes were dashed when Leeds gaffer, Neil Warnock last April announced that Leeds did not want to sign him permanently.

O'Dea is another utility defender who can either play in the centre or at left back.

We do seem to be after a defender who can play both a full back (typically left back) and central defence role. I suspect the three links above if all true are contingencies. Sign one and interest in the others will evaporate. Out of those three, my order of preference would be first Shackell, then Friend and finally O'Dea but all three would be talented enough
