Rumour Mill-Looks Like Jay to Saints for £7m?

It was almost inevitable that Burnley would lose Jay Rodriguez to a Premier League club in the summer and it now looks likely that that club will be newly promoted Southampton.

The Clarets are reported to have agreed a record breaking £7million fee with Southampton although some reports are suggesting that the figure could be more like £6-£6.5 million.

It would appear that the Saints have won the battle to sign the striker despite interest from a number of top flight teams, including Newcastle, Everton and Fulham. West Ham were also recently linked as were Welsh rivals, Swansea and Championship side,Cardiff; all these clubs were reported to have offered in the region of £5.5 million. Clearly then Southampton have come closest to Burnley's valuation of the player.

Burnley's asking price was thought to be in the region of £8 million .

However it is also reported that personal terms have yet to be agreed which may take a little while to sort out simply because Rodriguez is currently out of the country and has yet to meet with the south coast club's officials.

The Saints have long had an interest in the 22 year old England Under 21 International and it was understood a bid of about £4.5-£5 million was rejected by Burnley last summer. The club will be even more of an attraction now that they have achieved promotion to the top flight and of course Jay Rod could be tempted by a move to the Hampshire coast bearing in mind former team mates Danny Fox and Jack Cork are already at St Marys.

With just a year remaining on his current contract, Burnley appear to have had no option but to cash in on the player in view of the sustained pressure from so many interested parties.

If the rumours are true and they do appear to have a lot of substance then at least the business has been done quickly and the speculation won't continue throughout the summer. It will also give the club sufficient time to use the funds to rebuild the squad ahead of the new season. Hopefully the new Chairs will allow the majority of the £7 million to be given to the manager for new players.

Sorfampton feeder club.....oh heck what have PNE got as they are our feeder club and I am not sure they have any great strikers......doomed I tell you...we are all doomed Captain Mainwairing

Sad but inevitable. Now lets move on and please use ALL the money to get some quality midfield/defence players. It could just turn out to be for the best and good luck to JayRod.

Some gossip also suggests Chaplow could be returning in player plus cash deal for Jay Rod. Not sure I believe that one! We can do a lot better than Chaplow too who always struck me as being 'too big for his boots' as well if you pardon the pun! He's done bugger all since leaving Turf Moor
turfmanphil
Fair enough - agree lets move on. I would take Chappy back though TMP.
Claretdale
No dispute from me on the wisdom of doing the deal early (rather than holding out for an extra mill in what is said to be a tight market) and moving on with all our good wishes going with Jay... till we next face him on the pitch. I align myself with CD on Chappy rather than with TMP.
Couch Potato
Have to say though - When I say I would take Chappy back, it would of course depend on how he is being valued! :-)
Claretdale
I'd like to know how much EH will be getting out of the sale of Jrod for new players.
Fedupclaret
As ever, FC, the VAT man and the lawyers and the agents will get chunks of the headline figure. So the most that ever can be re-invested (as opposed to new-invested) is - I don't know exactly - but probably more like 70% +/- than 100%. Will Eddie get that much? Dunno. CD - how much do you reckon Chappie's worth?
Couch Potato
Would not mind Chappie coming back he never asked to leave and is a Burnley supporter local lad an all.
Grimsby Claret
Chappie - Nil value. How much EH gets to spend? probably peanuts. Am I being negative or realistic? Praying I am being very negative and the summer will bloom for the Clarets.

Austin and Ings were forming a good partnership at the end of the season. Pato may return from injury one day. Cammy Howieson may return from his International duties a more experienced and threat to the slot on the bench for a striker. Its not all doom and gloom. We don't need to spend a fortune we just need to strengthen a few areas. 3 good signings could do it?
VinRogue
We need more than 3 signings! We only have 4 recognised defenders!!!!!
deadlydave
Aryn Williams is more than adequate cover for Tripps, Edgar, Duff and Mee in the centre, Lafferty left back and Mee played there last season. We have another talented youngster in the wings too. I would be suprised if we sign more than 2 defenders. Midfield where you are looking for say 4 players if you include wingers, Wallace, Marney, Bartley, McCann + youngsters, this is the area where I would want to spend the most cash. We need goals from our midfield players if we are to push on and last season that was sadly lacking and needs addressing.
VinRogue
I would probably be looking for a GK, 1 defender ( first choice cb), a Jay replacement and 2 creative midfielders. Therefore I would say 5 people for a first team shirt.
Claretdale
I don't think we will replace Jay and whilst I would like a keeper given we have offered Beast a contract (has he accepted?) I doubt we would start the season with Grant, Beast and a new keeper, although I would be happy to do that. So I agree with Dale but think Keeper and Jay being replaced will not happen unless we sell Pato or he is still on the sick!!
