Rumour Mill-York's Meredith Linked!

Sky Sports understands Watford and Burnley are among a number of Championship clubs looking to bring in York City left back, James Meredith.

Meredith has been on top form this season for the Minstermen helping them gain promotion back to the Football League following an eight-year gap.

The Australian left-back can also play in midfield.Indeed Meredith started in the middle of the park in their 2-1 play-offs final win over Luton Town at Wembley.

He does have some experience of league football too having played for Chesterfield and Shrewsbury after coming through the ranks at Derby County. Meredith joined York City in May 2009 and has since made over 130 appearances for the club.

The defender's contract expires this summer and he will then be able to leave Bootham Crescent on a free transfer.

I have noticed the club seem to be linked with a number of utility players. More often than not defenders who can play across the back four and/or in midfield! Makes sense if we are going to be constrained by financial problems and a small squad. Know nowt about this guy though although he sounds OK if he can make a three-league step up! Guess we need left back cover with Easton going, that would release Mee to play more centrally.

And there was me thinking that now we've got two chairmen we'd have double the spending power, and we were going to get Kompany and Vidic! That dream apparently dashed for now, I trust Eddie to pick from the slightly less elevated ranks better than myself. Whether he's actually looking at this guy, we'll only ever know if he actually buys him. How long now till the window actually opens? Anyone got any instinct as to how robust the transfer economy is? I wonder if it's going to be one in which there's early action, or whether most deals will come just before it re-closes. If I were Eddie, I think I'd be putting a little pressure on Hoos and the Chairs to maybe be prepared to spend a little over the odds on a few key signings early on... then sit back to see what's on offer late. But whether sellers and agents will jump to close deals if we do make early offers, or hold out to see if anything better comes along, may turn out to be a different matter.
