Rumour Mill-Luke It Might Be O'Neill!

20 year old Mansfield defender,Luke O`Neill is attracting the attention of a number of Championship clubs including Burnley according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

Other clubs in the running could well be both this season's Championship play-off semi-final losers, Birmingham and Cardiff.

O`Neill has only one year left to run on his contract. It is thought he would only command a modest transfer fee in the region of about £50,000 to £60,000 although the Stags may well want to boost that with add-ons and sell-on clauses.

The Slough-born defender has been a key player this season for the Conference side helping them come closer to a return to the Football League. Sadly though the Stags were beaten in their Conference play-off semi final by York City and they now face a fifth year of non-league football.

O'Neill is a former England youth international at under 17 level and started his career with Leicester City coming through their youth academy. Loan spells at Tranmere and Kettering followed before he joined Mansfield on a free transfer in June 2011.

The right back has both height and pace. He likes to get forward by all accounts and support the attack. His set-pieces and crossing ability also pose a threat.

Sounds a good un and we need a right back as cover unless God forbid, this is a contingency in case we lose Trippier!

Interesting - we shall see I suppose. 5 years since Mansfield went down - time really does fly!

Am glad to read the rumours, shows we are interested. I am trusting EH to get some bargains, but how long to wait to see them perform? Most of us are waiting for next season. This is a hard call.

Our own Aryn Williams is a better prospect at right back, I would love to see Aryn given the job of understudy to Tripps. Spend the cash on where we really need players i.e. in the starting eleven.

Mansfield Town have rejected an offer from Championship outfit Burnley for full back Luke O'Neill, the Stags confirmed on Monday afternoon. The Clarets are the first club to come forward with a concrete bid for the player after recent press reports have linked the ex-Leicester trainee with a move to a handful of Championship clubs. Manager Paul Cox told the club's website www.mansfieldtown.net this afternoon: "The offer has been turned down as it is well below our valuation of the player. "We have also had enquiries from another Championship club. "We are in the process of putting together a squad which will improve on our position of third place from last season - to do that we will aim to keep our best players. "As a manager, I would never want to stand in the way of a young player's progression, but I have to do what is in the best interests of this football club. "I expect more offers to come in for Luke and if the right offer comes along, we will not stand in his way."
