Carlisle to Northampton or Cobblers?

Aidy Boothroyd is clearly an admirer of Burnley's central defender, Clarke Carlisle. He was his boss at Watford and brought him to League 2 Northampton on loan last January.

The 32 year old defender helped the club avoid relegation with the Cobblers finishing in 20th spot, four points clear of the drop zone.

Boothroyd is now looking to sign Carlisle on a permanent deal.

'Conversations with Clarke are ongoing," he said.

'I thanked all the loan players on Friday for the work they have done with us. Clarke will have a lot of offers and we`ve got to put an offer together for him and make sure all the little things that are important in his life are right for him.'

Clarets fans have been resigned to losing Carlisle in the summer for most of the season and he clearly no longer features in Eddie Howe's future plans.

Good luck for the future though Clarke and thanks for the good times!

Could Carlisle finish up in League 2 or has he still got more to give in the higher leagues? Reckon he could still do a job in League 1 but would struggle in Championship

Not sure TMP - I was surprised he ended up at Northampton this season.

Not a problem, wish him well in Division 1 or 2 with a team happy to allow him time off for PFA and media work. He wasn't on my keep list and he can be added to Easton, McDonald & Treacy.

Just hope he's staying off the pop (though he might struggle tonight, its nearly Blackburn relegation time!!!) thanks for the good times indeed.

Think League 2 is probably the right level for him at this stage of his career. Whenever I saw him play for us he always gave his best - not the greatest player in the world but not the worst we have ever had either.
