Rumour Mill-That's My Bhoy, Jay Rod?

Rumour Mill-That's My Bhoy, Jay Rod?

According to the Daily Record, Scottish Champions Celtic are understood to be lining up a move for Clarets striker Jay Rodriguez in the summer.

Celtic gaffer, Neil Lennon is thought to be impressed by the local born talent and is keeping a close eye on his progress.

The paper then goes on to suggest that Burnley could be prepared to let him go for as little as £3 million which for an England Under 21 international would certainly disappoint many Burnley fans.

Southampton reportedly bid £6 million for the player only last summer, and the newly promoted Championship runners-up could be back in for him again when the transfer window opens. Other Premier League clubs have also been linked with the striker. Owen Coyle was reportedly interested in him earlier this month although if true his chances of success could revolve around Bolton avoiding relegation from the top flight. David Moyes was also thought to be considering bringing the striker to Goodison Park.

Despite all the rumours and there are bound to be more in the weeks ahead, Rodriguez is thought to be happy at Burnley but Eddie Howe is under no illusion that with money tight, the club could find it difficult to hold onto him.

Speaking to the local press this week, Eddie Howe said:

"I think it`s going to be our biggest battle to try to keep the squad together.

"What we`d love to do is add players the other way and not lose anybody.

"Realistically we know that`s going to be quite difficult.

"We need to try to limit who we lose.

"But we`ll have to wait and see.

"A lot of that will be out of our hands really, and it will be a case of making sure we sign the right players to compliment what we have going forward."

If he is to go,let's make sure the business is done quickly and we get a decent fee for him (£3million is a bloody joke!). The money should go straight back into rebuilding the squad too not some huge black hole. I don't want to have to keep writing rumour/counter-rumour articles all summer only to see him go on the last day of the transfer window when we can do bugger all with the money until January!! There has to be a sense of urgency and a desire to maximise our chances of promotion with just two seasons worth of parachute money remaining

Plus of course we wouldn't want to buy someone late in the transfer period and mess another teams planning up either. So I suggest for tmp all our transfers are completed by July 7th and after that date we stick with what we have thus keeping our leader happy. (tic)

I think it is fairly certain Jay will leave - as said above it needs to be as soon as possible and for as much as possible.

There is a serious point here, if they are expecting to lose players then let's get in replacements earlier as contingencies. We need a new right back as cover, we need a new striker a la Vokes type as well, so let's supplement and at least have cover should our key players leave late in the day. If they don't we have a healthier squad anyway and one that might improve our promotion chances to help reap the greater financial reward. [Edited by turfmanphil]

Suzanne Geldard in LT today (Monday 30/4)-Burnley are facing a battle to keep Jay Rodriguez – with at least five Premier League clubs chasing their top scorer. Newcastle, Fulham, Norwich, Bolton and newly promoted Southampton are among those who have registered their interest in the 22-year-old. Scottish Premier League champions Celtic have also entered the race for Rodriguez’s signature, although I understand that is an unlikely destination for the Clarets’ youth team product. Furthermore, it is believed that Burnley will want a minimum fee of £8million for their star man.....

Rather opportune reminder too in the local press this morning-He (Howe) would prefer to know the state of play before pre-season, having seen his plans reduced to tatters last year by the departure of Chris Eagles and Tyrone Mears two weeks from the start of the season, and Danny Fox after the opening game.

Not too concerned about JRod leaving, we always knew that was on the cards at the end of this season. I think we have enough striker cover. We need to strengthen the midfield and defence as a matter of urgency

If we get £6 million or more, that will be reasonably good business. Don't get why we haven't offered him a new deal, though. Vokes would be a good shout - less than £1 million, I'd have thought, but he may play for WWFC now they've been relegated. Hmm. Oh, and its "Bhoys" , by the way for Celtic!
