Rumour Mill-The Reebok Robinson Raid?

33 year old Bolton defender, Paul Robinson is reportedly attracting interest from both Burnley and Southampton; both teams who co-incidentally meet at St Mary's tomorrow in a Championship clash.

Robinson has fallen down the pecking order at the Reebok Stadium in recent weeks.

The former Watford and West Brom left back has not managed to make one league appearance since the Boxing Day defeat to Newcastle United.

Robinson is out of contract at the end of the season and Owen Coyle is thought to be willing to allow the former England Under 21 international to leave the club on a free transfer.

The Watford-born defender started his professional career with his local club after coming through the Hornet's Youth System. Robinson signed for West Brom in October 2003 for an initial fee of 250,000 which with add-ons eventually rose to 350,000. In July 2009, Robinson completed a season-long loan move to Bolton Wanderers to be re-united with his former manager Gary Megson. In the summer of 2010 Bolton paid West Brom a fee of 1 million to make the move permanent.

So are the Clarets really interested? There does not appear to have been an official approach for the player and you do wonder why Burnley would be interested in the predominantly left-sided defender although he can also play as a central defender. We seem to have the left back position adequately covered now with Ben Mee, Brian Easton and new signing, Danny Lafferty all in competition for the left back slot.

At the age of 33 too, this does not seem to fit the player profile that Howe appears to be setting. Howe it seems is looking mainly for young, long-term prospects for the future although a little experience in defence would not go amiss.

It is all a little bit strange being linked with a number of left backs recently when in fact now cover for Kieran Trippier at right back would appear more of a priority.

Naw can't see any logic in this one. I just wonder if this is all old news, Burnley were clearly trying to sort out the left back spot and provide cover. We probably had a number of contingencies in mind before Lafferty came on board.

Non starter this, too old and just would not fit into the squad Eddie is building.

The Mirror now claims Robinson is being chased by the Championship rivals. Experienced Robinson is available for a loan deal until the end of the season after finding himself down the pecking order at the Reebok Stadium.
