Rumour Mill- Burnley Luke to Chambers?

Could Burnley be considering a move for Nottingham Forest defender, Luke Chambers?

Forest websites and Twitter seem to be suggesting that Burnley have already sorted out a deal for the 6ft 1' 26 year old with some suggesting we have agreed a fee of £1.2 million plus two of our fringe players to lure him to Turf Moor.

Chambers started his professional career at Northampton Town having joined them as a youth in 2001. He eventually became captain under then Northampton manager Colin Calderwood.

Calderwood of course eventually became manager of Nottingham Forest and it was during his tenure there that he brought Chambers to the City Ground in January 2007 for an undisclosed fee.

He has since made over 180 appearances for the club and was made captain for the start of the 2011-12 season by former gaffer, Steve McClaren.

The Republic of Ireland National team are also thought to be watching his progress closely. Although born in Kettering, Chambers would qualify to play for the RoI through his Irish grandfather.

Although naturally a centre back, Chambers can also play at right back, so could be an attractive option for Eddie Howe's back four providing natural cover for Kieran Trippier.

Forest look likely to lose their centre back, Wes Morgan to Leicester so to let another centre back go could be a significant problem for under-pressure manager, Steve Cotterill. His side are already looking like relegation candidates with no money to spend and currently third from bottom four points clear of safety.

It is difficult to gauge if there is any substance in this rumour but if there is any last minute deal to be sorted out, it is interesting to note that Burnley play Forest at the City Ground on Tuesday night. That night just happens to be transfer deadline day so everybody will be in the right place at the right time to sort out the paperwork before 11pm!

My senses tell me this is just idle gossip but it is an interesting one with the two sides playing each other on transfer deadline day. Could be a football first if we sign him whilst both parties are present in the same place!

Interestingly Vital Forest fans refer to him as 'Captain Calamity' and reckon the responsibility has affected his play! One post also read- 'Chambers was by far and away our best player last season, I am certain that the captaincy is the reason for his drop in form. If I remember correctly we had a poll on here and Chambers was the fans choice as captain.'

I'm warming the car up Phil in the hope this is true. I'll drive him to you for that price.

I Wouldn't mind come kind of swap deal involving Andre personally.

Interesting thought, YC! Could Amougou be one of the two 'fringe' players possibly involved in a Chambers deal? At least Forest would still then have one experienced centre back to replace Chambers/Morgan

Just been reminded too that Cotts had some interest in Amougou when Pompey gaffer last summer, did he not?

Yes I believe he was mentioned as interested last summer. This rumour could have some truth then! Who would be the other fringe player?

Only have to see what's coming from our manager and director to know there wont be any £1.2M deals going down ..... Just not happening folks

Howe did say recently though he had a couple of irons in the fire but we don't have long to wait to find out. We must be in a sorry state if we cant find £1.2 million and a salary after all the players we have taken off the payroll including recently Cort and Eckersley

£1.2 million seems more like a mountain than a stumbling block to me and what is the total cost if our two fringe players are added in. Seems a bit expensive but it would be encouraging to see the Board spending some money provided it remains at fringe players.

Guess it depends how you look at this. Let's assume Jay Rod will be off in the summer (if not Jan) for at least £5 million! Now in about 3 months time we will have made a £3.8 million profit if the Chambers deal goes through now! In the meantime, we have removed two players on the fringe from the payroll and saved on salary?

Also TMP it gives us a new first team player whilst still holding on for Jay for the rest of the season. If we go up keep Jay, if we don't sell for 5mill and already have a player who will be more settled at the club. It would be considered lesser a risk to the board who don't want to spend money if they know it will come later. To be honest though I would doubt a 1.2mill fee plus 2 players would be on eddies mind, I would consider Andre plus cash to be reasonable and with Cotts previously being interested it seems the more likely swap deal. I would welcome the move as it means we have a defender who would be more willing and ambitious.

No one will spend £1.2m on Andre or swap a player worth that amount when his contract is up at the end of the season, Or would they ?

Interesting discussion. Dunno. What does anyone else think?

This would go against the flow of Eddies transfer dealings so far, BUT how much does he want to swap Bikey and how much does Cotts rate Amougou? How much debt are Forest carrying and so the possibility of 2 players for 1 and some cash maybe a good bit of business in the Forest boardroom? I really haven't a clue but in Eddie I trust.

Good questions VR, it all depends on their desperation and how badly they want to get out of the drop zone! More importantly though is he any good? Would he make a good addition to the squad?

The fact that a price has been mentioned deems it poppycock to me. Aren't all fees undisclosed these days ?

Any fee mentioned has to be pure guesswork. Strikes me that a straight swap of Chambers for Andre and two fringe players would be more Eddie's style and appealing to the Board.

Nottingham Forest have now confirmed they have accepted a bid for defender Wes Morgan from Leicester City. They are going to be up a creek without a central defensive paddle if they now let Chambers go as well!

I watched Luke Chambers play a few times last season and I have to say he was a massive part of them reaching the play-offs. In some games he was absolutely magnificent. His positioning, defensive ability and organisational skills are great. This led to him being named Forests player of the season last year and being awarded with the captains armband. Unfortunately, this has led to a drop in his form, but there is still no doubt that he is a top class defender with so much ability. I really hope this one goes through, he could be exactly what we need to push for promotion.

Looks like we have our answer-Tindall was quick to mute speculation linking imposing Nottingham Forest defender Luke Chambers with a switch to the Clarets. “No there’s nothing that we’re aware about,” he said. “When there’s a transfer window there’s always speculation; half of it’s not true. “There’s been no movement from our end. “I’m sure we’ve been linked with many more players but there’s not much truth in it.”
