The Long Road to Rochdale..and Eventually Back!

The Long Road to Rochdale..and Eventually Back!

Burnley defender, Kevin Long has gone out on loan for a second time this season and again will be playing for manager John Coleman, but this time at his new club, Rochdale. Coleman left Accrington Stanley to became Rochdale manager on Monday and has now offered Long a much tougher challenge, one league higher than before! Long has joined the League One side on an initial month's loan with a view to a longer stay at Spotland. The 21 year old Irishman has signed in time to play in Rochdale's local derby against Bury at home this Saturday.

In the earlier part of the season, he was at League 2, Accrington Stanley and indeed has had three spells there under John Coleman. This season he spent the first five months at the Crown Ground making 26 appearances before returning to Turf Moor at the start of January

There are suggestions in the local media that Long could be joined by another Burnley player at Spotland. Striker, Alex MacDonald has also been looked at by Coleman and the 22 year old could also be sent out on a one month loan. Eddie Howe would certainly not stand in his way saying:

"Alex has done very well for us, he has a great attitude so the next stage of his career would be to go out and play games," said Howe.

"We would have to make sure we don`t leave the squad light on numbers, but we want all our young players who need games to go out and play football.

"Hopefully he would rise to the challenge."

All good for the lads but in the end it means a depleted squad so where is the cover?

I am not that worried about Long being cover as I didn't yet have him as a potential for that. Where my thoughts go are to the training ground, Development Squad and Youth Team. Have we enough players?

If we sign this new kid Lafferty, a left back, I guess he will be like Long as well and not get a sniff of the first team. Do we have cover at right back? I have seen Long play there in pre-season but he is normally a central defender
