Rumour Mill-Okuonghae Who?

25 year old Colchester United defender, Magnus Okuonghae was reported to be on Eddie Howe's radar over the weekend.

The Nigerian left Dagenham & Redbridge and signed a two-year contract with League One team Colchester United in July 2009 and in December 2009 it was announced he had signed a new contract until 2012.

He is currently captain of the U's and at 6ft 3 is affectionately known as 'The Beast' by Colchester fans.

Sky Sports understand Burnley, Millwall and Crystal Palace are looking at the player along with Premier League, Norwich City and League 1 leaders, Charlton Athletic.

Okuonghae came through Fulham's youth system before joining Rushden & Diamonds in 2002. Spells at Aldershot Town, St Albans City and Crawley Town followed before he moved to Essex to play for Dagenham & Redbridge in 2007 during which time he also had a loan spell at Weymouth.

Could Howe be interested in the player? Well the noises coming out of the club suggests we will not be making any new permanent signings in the week that remains of the January window so it looks doubtful.

Two Beasts at the Club? Well he looks like one but could he do a job at this level? Know nowt about this lad, so again it would be a case of in 'Eddie We Trust'. If the media rumour was not from Sky Sports, I would be more cynical but who knows.

I'm clueless on him
Totally_Claret
I doubt this one, but as a more long term replacement for Duff, sure.
nor-claret
Is he ready to move away from the Thames Valley and Delta where (broadly speaking) every club mentioned is based except us oop nawf?
Couch Potato
It does seem strange to be linked with a player after Eddie has stated he has no money to spend. I do confess myself a little disappointed with the news of lack of funds... Will any be available come summer?? How is Eddie meant to rebuild a squad from which players were sold by not using the money gained from sales? And this is also whilst having parachute payments! I wish the board would back Eddie more when we could push for promotion!!
YorkshireClaret
I can;t see this one coming off. I have to admit worried about the info coming from the turf. Lack of funds etc! Maybe it's a red herring and we have some to spend and eddie is throwing us off the scent. One thing that can't happen is selling anyone! I like Eddie he's gone public with telling the board that he doesn't want any of his players sold. TMP we have a chance here. Speculate to accumulate. UTC How much did Mee cost by the way?
Stuart75
Cant see it myself but who knows.

everyone add @platinumfootie on twitter - football updates and everything good

If Eddie gets us promotion on the peanuts the Board gives him it will be a remarkable achievement, if we then stayed up it would be nothing short of a miracle. Norwich showed us that. The Board have to realise that we have a real opportunity here but money has to be spent, not hundreds of millions but at least a few millions or not only will we llose out on the big time but we will also lose Eddie Howe and condemn ourselves to permanent mediocrity.
cornwallclaret
Are you suggesting he's Thames Delta Bluesman CP ?

A Trialist is in today's behind closed doors game at Wolves
Totally_Claret
Has anyone got figures on what Norwich spent last year and this year so far, compared to what we spent when getting promoted and in our PL year? It would be intersting to make a detailed comparison, and with Blackpool's spending as well. What did Norwich do in the January 2011 window? QPR meanwhile seem to be proving that spending a lot of money on biggish names is no passport to success in the PL, while Ipswich seem to be proving the same is true in the Championship. Swansea released a statement this week about how they hoped to recoup an 8million loss on getting promoted in this PL year. I think the loss came mainly from bonuses and enforced infrastructure spending rather than on pushing up their wage bill. But I'd be interested in seeing figures, which may well change my hunches that you can't buy success in the yo-yo zone.
Couch Potato
I think Lafferty is the trialist TC.
YorkshireClaret
Just wish folk would accept that of course you cant buy success but that you can increase your chances of success by buying the right quality of player and ensuring you have enough depth in the squad to cover for injuries/suspensions. The chances are much higher than the chances of avoiding failure by not doing so! QPR already spent last season to ensure their promotion, Yes, Norwich did not but they seem more an exception than the rule. QPR might be struggling now but we shall see how they now react under a new manager compared to how we did and where they finish up! There are already reports they are preparing to spend 30 million and of course Mark Hughes vs Brian Laws does tend to focus the mind on the relative level of ambition between the two clubs Blackpool of course spent bugger all last season, I believe less than Burnley in their Prem season (20m v 10m?) and both suffered the same fate...the drop! I believe like Leicester you can go too mad and spend so much you have a team unable to gel through constantly being changed. Saints on the other hand with more targeted spending seem to be reaping the rewards despite a recent wobble which all teams get (witness QPR at this point last season)
