Turf Titbits

We provide below some little snippets of Burnley news that you may have missed recently allowing you to catch up with all things Claret.

Reading Fixture Change

THE Clarets` nPower Championship fixture against Reading at the Madejski Stadium next month has been brought forward a day to Friday, 17 February (kick-off 8pm) in order that the game can be shown live on Sky Sports.

Young Gun Loans

Development squad Burnley midfielder David Lynch has joined Blue Square North promotion challengers Stalybridge Celtic on an initial one month`s loan. The club are managed by former Morecambe boss Jimmy Harvey and operate on a full-time basis. David`s cousin, Chris, a former Burnley youth team player is also at the club.

Lynch moves to Bower Fold after completing a recent three-month spell with league rivals Droylsden. The 17 year old came through the Turf Moor Centre of Excellence and then completed a two-year scholarship before signing a 12-month professional deal in June 2011 He was named Burnley`s young player of the year for the 2010-11 season.

Two more of Burnley's development squad have also gone out on loan this week.

Joe Jackson and Alex-Ray Harvey have both joined Blue Square Premier club Barrow on loan for a month. Jackson returns to his hometown and only last Saturday was named for the first time in the eighteen for the Clarets FA Cup clash away to Norwich. He was an unused sub but it was good experience for the young prospect. The 18 year old was given Shirt Number 34. The young gun, born in Barrow signed a 12 month professional contract in June 2011.

Clarets fans will be more familiar with Alex Ray-Harvey. He has made a few appearances on the first team bench and played in friendly games. The left-footed midfielder is locally born and joined the club as a nine-year old and came through the youth team set up after joining the club`s Centre of Excellence. He signed his first professional contract in the summer of 2009 and was then awarded with another 12 month deal in 2010. The 20 year old had his first taste of senior football during a loan spell at Fleetwood Town in March 2011 and was then given another year`s contract at Turf Moor in the summer of last year. He featured a few times in our pre-season preparations before rejoining Fleetwood on a month`s loan in August 2011.

Eddie Howe talking about the loans said:

"It's important for them to get some first-team football experience to further their development.. We have been keen to give as many as possible the chance and moving to Barrow is an ideal opportunity for Joe and Alex to play senior football at a decent level."

Youth Team Progress in FA Youth Cup

It was not unlucky Friday 13th for our Burnley youth team last night! They came from behind to beat Ipswich Town youth 3-1 and progress to the last 16 of FA Youth Cup helped by a brace from Steven Hewitt.

Terry Pashley`s youth team are in impressive form at the moment and have won their last 13 games.

620 fans turned up last night to watch the game at Turf Moor and see the Clarets progress to the next round. Also watching the game was first team gaffer, Eddie Howe.

Burnley started brightly but simply failed to put away their chances. Ipswich came more-and-more into the game and two minutes before half-time broke the deadlock. It was a sloppy goal to concede and came from a defensive mix-up after our back four failed to deal with a corner. Lawrence scored for the Tractor Boys after bundling the ball home at the near post in-off our keeper, Josh Cook.

However, the Clarets equalised on the stroke of half-time after being awarded a penalty. Steven Hewitt scored from the spot after Archie Love, angling a run into the box had been brought down by Blues right-back, Aaron Jones on the edge of the penalty area.

The Clarets came out determined in the second-half and soon began to make their pressure count. Shay McCartan held the ball up before cleverly timing his pass and squaring the ball to Hewitt. The midfielder on a strong run forward then finished superbly putting the Clarets 2-1 up.

On the hour mark, Burnley doubled their lead thanks to an own goal from Ipswich midfielder, Joe Wright. Jason Gilchrist had latched on to a powerful header from Alex Coleman and rounded the keeper but Wright failed to deal with the danger sliding the ball into his own net.

The Clarets were now in complete control and had more chances but had to be content in the end with a convincing 3-1 win.

The victory now means Burnley will face a trip to either West Brom or Reading in the next round.

Joshua Cook; Aryn Williams, Thomas Anderson, Alex Coleman, Luke Conlan; Alex Mullin, Archie Love, Steven Hewitt, Adam Evans; Jason Gilchrist, Shay McCartan (Luke Daly 83).

Subs not used: Callum Jakovlevs, Jack Errington, Lewis Nuttall, Charlie Holt.

New Shirt Sponsor from 2012-13

Premier Range, a Todmorden-based online kitchen specialist, will become Burnley`s shirt sponsor for two years from this summer (with an option for a third) replacing Fun88, whose deal expires at the end of this season.

The fee for the new deal is undisclosed.

Premier Range general manager Martin Mensforth said:

"We are very excited about this deal as we have always endeavoured to support Burnley Football Club in any way we can.

"On a personal note, and as a Burnley fan as well as a sponsor, I would like to thank Fun88 for their support of Burnley over the last few years and promise we will continue their good work."

Premier Range has been involved in sponsorship deals with Burnley over the last three years, including the youth team

Burnley X-Files-The Cort Addickstion!

We reported on Vital Burnley earlier this week that defender, Leon Cort had had his contract at Burnley terminated by mutual consent. Cort had been on a season-long loan at Charlton Athletic this season. There was however a clause in his on-loan contract that Burnley could recall the player in January and they took up that option so they could bring to an end the loan deal and then terminate his contract at Burnley FC.

The 32 year old this week therefore became a free agent and a few days later he signed a permanent deal with the Addicks after accepting an 18 month contract. It might be surprising to some considering he only played six games for Charlton during his loan spell but clearly gaffer, Chris Powell has shown some faith in him and we all wish him well at the Valley! Just glad really the whole sorry saga is over.

Speaking about the deal, Cort said:

"The lads have been brilliant and helped settle me in straight away. It certainly made me feel like I`ve been here a lot longer,

"I`ve really enjoyed the first half of the season here, and look forward to helping the club get back into the Championship."

Wonder where that leaves Fun88 and whether they will still be involved in any financial arrangement with the club? It seems to have put paid to all those rumours that they might be our financial saviours and could even take over the club!!!
