Rumour Mill-Pompey and Howe?

Could Eddie Howe be about to return to Portsmouth but this time as manager? The Sunday Mirror has today fuelled speculation that he could be interested in the position vacated by former Burnley gaffer, Steve Cotterill who recently became Nottingham Forest manager.

Howe had a brief spell at the Hampshire club as a player but only turned out for two games due mainly to a persistent knee injury.

The tabloid believes that Howe is keen to return to the South coast where he spent most of his playing and managerial career at Bournemouth.

One source at Portsmouth is reported as saying:

"He (Howe) is an ambitious young manager with a good track record."

Portsmouth though have apparantly had 50 applicants for the vacant post and others strongly in the frame appear to be former Doncaster Rovers boss, Sean O'Driscoll and Molde coach and Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

There have been rumblings that Howe has not been happy at Burnley with suggestions that the Board have not matched his appoinment with the ambition he was expecting. He certainly seemed less than happy about losing Danny Fox to Southampton and has spent most of the season with an understrength squad being unable to bring in the reinforcements he wanted both in the now closed summer transfer window and in the still open loan window to date.

It is difficult though to believe, he would make the move to Portsmouth after such a brief spell at Turf Moor. Surely it would be better, if he continued to build his own team this season and see how things pan out? Howe certainly has my full backing despite my feeling he has so far been dealt a rough hand by the Board. My fear is that the fans though could turn against him unless we can move away from the bottom half of the table and begin to look like promotion contenders come the festive season. Our team seems to be blowing hot and cold at the moment and it looks like things could go either way considering we are five points off the drop zone but equally just six points off a play-offs spot with a game in hand.

This would utterly and totally be the wrong time to have to start looking for a new manager despite some of our posters thinking Howe is out of his depth. All he needs are the funds to get in the right quality of players and surely we have to judge him over a full season before calling for him to go?

I hope this is just the ususal press speculation and nothing more. Eddie is slowly building a good side here, and I think it's only a matter of time before the consistency improves.

Howe was brought to Pompey by Harry that season we won the championship, but was injured after a couple of games and Linvoy (who Harry was going to dump) came in and did so well.. I would welcome him back at Fratton..he's a good young manager and would be popular with Blues fans I suspect... You could re appoint Brian Laws..only joking.. I am really not sure that will happen..O'Driscoll maybe would be the most likely ex AFCB manager to get the Fratton job PUP..PPU

Cannot believe this will happen even with our board, though saying that some of our fans might be happy with this news. I'm with Welsh on this one even Howe has said this is a team in transition and still rebuilding and not the finished artical.

would be interested in a factual story with regards howe and his attitude towards the board ( not for one minute suggesting this is not factual) would just like some meat on the bones! To be honest would you be happy with this board if you where our manager ? time for them to go thats for sure

As a pompey fan I'd be happy with the link; wish it were true but I can't say I believe it.

Think Alex Fergurson is available after todays result ;-)

I don't think even Fergie could do a job given the BFC Board parsimony.

And Villas-Boas 8c8! But, I would guess that at least 80% of the Bfc squad changes were either ones Eddie wanted, or ones where players made the decisions that neither Board nor Eddie could change. Eddie strikes me as quite a cool-headed sort of guy who looks long term. I don't think he'll want on his CV that he ran out on a club after less than a year because of a disagreement over just one or two players. I think he'll also look at Pompey and realise that there isn't a pot of gold to splash around there either. Also, ClaretsPlayer commented that he has moved house to Hale Barns, which goes against the media speculation that he still lives down south. So, while I would always admit to being likely to be wrong, I don't see this move happening... unless the Board have been listening to those messageboarders who want Howe out, and would rather be paid to shift him than have to pay compo!!!

Nice one Couch. Further more - this is his squad now that the "legacy" stuff is pretty much gone. If he wants to show the world what he can do - I suspect that this is his best chance which is probably why he took the job. Personally I quite like him.

I wonder if the club receives "an offer we could not turn down" I think if Jay goes in January without Eddies permission then he will walk. If he does leave then I wouldn't blame him if decisions are and were made without his blessing.
