Clarets International-Macca,Edgar & Cort Update

With no game this weekend due to the International Break, we thought we would provide you with an update regarding those Clarets players in action for their countries these past few days.

Burnley striker, Alex MacDonald, playing for the Scotland Under 21 side on Thursday night, scored his first goal at this level after being named in the starting eleven for the first time. The Scots played Luxembourg U21s at the Josy Barthel Stadium in a European qualifier eventually romping home convincingly in a 5-1 victory. It was Macca who opened the scoring too. There was no score up to the 30th minute but that all changed when MacDonald on the edge of the box shot towards goal. The ball bounced in front of the keeper but despite the stopper getting a touch it was deflected into the net to put the Scots 1-0 up. Huddersfield striker, Jordan Rhodes then scored a brace to make it 3-0 at half-time. In the second half, Rhodes got his hat-trick before Luxembourg pulled one back. Hibernian defender, Paul Hanlon then popped up late to make it 5-1 late on and complete a miserable night for the home side. The Scots now face Austria U21 on Monday at St. Mirren in the next round of the competition.

David Edgar has also been in international action for Canada after starting in their CONCACAF World Cup 2014 qualifying game away to St Lucia. The game was played in the Beausejour Stadium and ended in a Canadian rout with the Caribbean national side going down 7-0. Edgar played the full 90 minutes earning his fourth international cap. This is Canada`s third victory in the competition out of three games and they will he hoping to maintain their 100% record when they face Puerto Rico in Toronto on Tuesday.

Perhaps the most surprising news on the International front recently was the announcement that Burnley defender, Leon Cort currently out on a season-long loan at Charlton had been named in Guyana`s squad for their up-and-coming CONCACAF World Cup qualifying games. It has though now got even better for Leon! Guyana played Barbados away in the Bridgetown National Stadium on Friday and came out 2-0 winners maintaining their 100% record having now won all three of their opening games in this competition. Cort was given his first cap and helped his side keep a clean sheet! He could also feature in Guyana`s next qualifying game away to Bermuda in Prospect on Tuesday night. Either way though Cort has now become the first player to make an appearance for Guyana whilst still on Burnley`s books and has also been entered onto the club`s International Honours Board on display in the main reception area at Turf Moor.

One of our young guns, striker Shay McCartan also scored for the Northern Ireland U19s in their Euro qualifier against Belarus. He scored the opening goal with a header from a corner helping his side win 3-1 thus keeping their qualification hopes alive
