Burnley Welsh on Carling Cup Bet!

Burnley Welsh on Carling Cup Bet!

The Carling Cup fourth round draw was made on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday over the weekend and Burnley drew a pretty short straw in the guise of Cardiff City on Welsh soil

We will play the Bluebirds at the Cardiff City Stadium sometime during week commencing Monday 24th October.

Any hopes that we might have got a money-spinning draw against one of the top Premier League sides therefore evaporated and so did any hopes of a home tie for the fourth consecutive time.

Many Clarets fans were also hoping for the easiest ride on paper, which would have meant playing League 2 Aldershot. Sadly that wasn't to be either and the Shots managed instead to get a juicy home tie against Manchester United.

It was probably best we avoided playing our local rivals, Blackburn or indeed Owen Coyle's Bolton at this stage in view of our indifferent and worrying form of late so at least that was mission accomplished!

The chances of playing them later in the competition, even if we get past Cardiff City also took a knock with both clubs getting difficult ties. Blackburn face a tricky home tie against Premier League rivals Newcastle. The Toons yesterday comprehensively beat Blackburn 3-1 at St James Park putting Rovers in the relegation zone, third from bottom! At least the Carling Cup clash will be at Ewood Park.

Bolton too also drew a club they played yesterday in the Premier League. Owen Coyle's mob lost 3-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates and also had to suffer Wheater being sent off! The disastrous result ensures that Bolton are now propping up the Premier League table in bottom spot knowing that will have to face the Gunners again at the Emirates in the Carling Cup competition.

Blackburn third from bottom and Bolton bottom? It couldn't happen to two nicer clubs could it?

Anyway enough of what might have been, let's now focus on the Cardiff game

This was very much the worst possible draw in many ways and it certainly won't now be easy to progress to the quarter finals.

The all Championship affair hardly whets the appetite and this will be the fourth time we will have played them this year!

The last time we faced the Bluebirds on their home soil was a Championship game back in February last season when we earned a point in a hard-fought 1-1 draw. We then played them again at Turf Moor in May in our last match of the 2010-11 season with yet another 1-1 draw the final outcome!

The most recent clash was this season at Turf Moor only last month and for the third time running it finished 1-1.

Since that time Burnley's form has been inconsistent to say the least and we have struggled both in the Carling Cup and Championship. We are currently fourth from bottom in the Championship just two points clear of bottom club Doncaster. In the earlier rounds of the Carling Cup we beat League 2 sides, Burton Albion and Barnet but both those games went into extra time after surrendering two goal leads. It was a little bit more convincing against League 1 MK Dons at home in the third round clash in midweek but we still had to comeback from a goal down to win 2-1 following a very lacklustre first half.

Cardiff on the other hand are in 7th spot in the Championship just one point off the play-offs places with a game in hand. In the Carling Cup competition they have so far needed extra time in all three of the their previous rounds. In the first round they finally despatched League 2 Oxford United, 3-1 away before beating League 1, Huddersfield 5-3 at the Cardiff City Stadium. In the last round they won on penalties at home to Leicester following a 2-2 scoreline after extra time.

Oh well, let's hope we can get one over on the Bluebirds and progress to the quarter finals.

The full draw was as follows:

Wolves v Manchester City
Cardiff v Burnley
Blackburn v Newcastle
Arsenal v Bolton
Stoke v Liverpool
Aldershot v Manchester United
Crystal Palace v Southampton
Everton v Chelsea

Uninspiring draw to say the least but one strangely I think we might win! Bet it's 1-1 after 90 minutes though!!

I was planning to go in March to tick another ground off - but may now go to this instead! Agree though - rubbish draw!

Daft as it may seem I think Cardiff away is better than Cardiff at home for this round of the cup. Not sure I really know why I think an away tie against Cardiff puts more pressure on them and allows us to play with more freedom but I do?
