Shotton, Not On?

Speculation had been rife for some time that Stoke defender, Ryan Shotton could be on his way to Turf Moor with the club then also later confirming their interest

He was linked with a permanent move during the transfer window but that never happened so attention moved to a possible move when the loan window opened recently.

The hope was that the signing would be completed in time for the game against Middlesbrough at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Like everything else it seems this summer, it was once again a tale of frustration with no new faces on show in the back four.

The defence were pummeled on Saturday against a rampant Boro attack and that shocker of a defeat clearly highlighted too the urgency of strengthening the back four as soon as possible

Most Clarets fans recently though have been resigned to losing out on Ryan Shotton. He clearly seems to be in Stoke's plans for this season having also recently been named in their 25 man Premier League squad.

The 22 year old has played recently in both Stoke's Premier League and Europa Cup campaigns and was also on the bench for Saturday's game against Liverpool. He was an unused sub in their 1-0 home win.

Couple that with the fact he is also the long throw expert stand-in for Rory Delap, you would have to question why on earth Tony Pulis would want to release him.

Eddie Howe speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph also seems to be admitting he may have to look elsewhere to plug the gaps in our defence:

'We`re still in the hunt for a couple, but there will come a time when we`re going to have to look elsewhere,"

"I`m still trying (to bring players in), absolutely. I think we need to.

"But as we`ve said all along it`s proving quite difficult."

Just don't understand why this is dragging on and on! Surely Pulis knows whether he wants Shotton to stay or not by now. It is a bit worrying, we seem to be struggling even to sort out loans with the Championship campaign already underway and the team clearly struggling fifth from bottom [Edited by turfmanphil]

Think the problem is Shotton wants away for first team football not just Carling cup games, Pulis wants him as backup which i understand. BFC and EH are being told two different stories one from his agent saying he wants to come to the Club, and on the other hand Stoke are saying he part of there plans. Thats how i see it reading between the lines could be time to move on and get some bodies in to improve the team.

Yep,you make a good point there, Fedup! What is clear after Boro, is that we need to move fast something we don't seem to have been good at all summer!

If he was coming, he'd be here by now and all the time we wait, we slip lower and lower, making us a less appealing prospect for any potential signings. We've got to look elsewhere and quick. What I also want to see coming in, is some real steel in the middle, a wise head that can boss proceedings.

Agree MB. There was some talk we had some contingencies lined-up if we couldn't get Shotton. Craig Dawson, loan from West Brom was one.Let's see what happens before Posh game I suppose. Nobody in by then will surely set the alarm bells off though

We were also linked with Liverpool defender, Danny Wilson but Leeds now also linked with him..Monday rumour (12/9)-Danny Wilson is a loan target for Championship outfit Leeds United as the Scotland defender continues to find himself out of the Liverpool first team. (Daily Record)

Loan period is 93 days, if we bring players in to early this means they will return to their parent club for a few weeks, where as if we sign them 2/3 weeks into the loan period it allows for negotiations to make the player permanent whilst on loan with us and without the need for the players to return to their clubs, this has to be the way forward because if any of the loans do really well and return, it opens us up to having the player taken from under our noise

Fair point although it does beg the question then why it was put about we wanted someone in before Boro game. Not sure if that came from Howe or was media speak! What I do know is that every game we play like we did against Boro the worse our chances of promotion will get and the more our chances of struggling to survive will increase

Just noticed the most recent poll. Like others recently it is bipolar, giving just two options, and thereby denying all inbetweenies a voice. Perhaps, given this recent preference for bipolar surveys, we should just replace them all with one: I am depressed; I am (whatever the opposite of depressed is)?

Allowing folk to sit on the fence is too easy! lol This way you get an option vote or dont. It cant be that difficult to decide on the evidence of the games you have seen so far whther you think we are more likely to play like we did against Derby or Boro from now on? The opinion could change as the season progresses though

Shotton is not going to be allowed out on loan any player included in the 25 man squad of a premiership team is valued by their manager.

I think we all sense that AC, just makes you wonder therefore why we continue to be seen trying to flog a dead horse? Can't the club just say we have moved on rather than keep hinting at it?

I suspect Eddie is lingering on Shotton because a) he's good and b) will be worth a lot if we get him permenant and develop him. If it's only on loan though, need to move on. What's Stevie Caldwell doing these days :-)

I'm in the inbetween camp. We'll go down second from bottom.

And why can't a club who graced the premiership 2 years ago, supposedly went down stronger and wanted to be a "West Brom" sign any players?

I think the opposite of depressed is euphoric, or it's basically a Coyle/Laws polarisation.

EH has brought in two excellent signings in Hines and Junior.....HOWEVER we have no Plan B in midfield and no Plan A in defence. Strikers need the ball and if we are defending for 80% of the game the bottom half of the table will be our future. Find an inspirational leader, pay him the going rate......or are we too late! Oh yes the best we can do now is loan someone and try again in January.......this is becoming alarming.

EH must have known since he came the need for signing quality players in defence and midfield. Why has he not done so? He is reckoned to be an up and coming manager. Players will also think of potential success and wages, give them both and players will be available. It seems to me that the Board have given out the message that they will not gamble on success as they will not pay the wages that good players expect. That expectation may be unpalatable but that is the way it is. If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen and that is where we are, uncompetative and likely to remain so unless the Board relax the purswe strings.

Why would Shotton want to come to this club even if Stoke would let him? Word spreads fast in the football world, low ambition, low quality, low experience and in the bottom half of the table! No thanks!
