Charlton Cole Confirmed!

Charlton Cole Confirmed!

League 1 club, Charlton Athletic have completed the loan signing of Clarets defender Leon Cort following earlier speculation this morning in the local South London media.

The former Crystal Palace and Stoke 31 year old will now spend a season at The Valley.

Cort is a Londoner himself, born in Southwark so was obviously tempted by such a move.

Speaking about the move, Cort said:

"It's a fantastic move for me. Charlton are a massive club.

"When I found out they were interested in me, I was interested straight away. It's a club with real ambition."

Cort was one of Brian Laws early signings and came to Burnley in a £1.5million transfer from Stoke in January 2010. He struggled though to gain a regular place in the team and last season spent a period out on loan to Preston.

Most Clarets fans have been dismissive of the centre back and will not be shedding too many tears now that the deal has been done. Cort clearly does not feature in Burnley's plans with Barry Kilby saying recently, it would be better both for the player and club if they parted company.

In some ways a loan might be viewed as a disappointment but either way the club look unlikely to ever recoup the £1.5 million they forked out on him.His contract was for three-and-a-half years too so he could be on the books until the summer of 2013 if no club shows any interest in signing him permanently.

Wonder why nobody seems prepared to offer a permanent deal? Is he really that bad? Clearly we need to get him off the books as soon as possible with our current financial situation. Just wonder what salary he was on and if that has been half the problem

Think his salary is most certainly the stumbling block in gaining a permanent deal elsewhere, he is clearly not in our plans and if a loan deal is the only alternative then so be it, can't see Charlton paying all his wages though but it gives him a chance to put himself in the shop window and see what happens in January, that's if the rumour turns out to be true?
